history
The Estádio Municipal João Havelange in Uberlândia, the second largest city in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais after Belo Horizonte , was completed in 1982 and opened on May 27 of that year. For the first game, the Brazilian national soccer team and the national team of Ireland met for a friendly. In the game that ended 7-0 for the Selecao, striker Falcão scored the first goal in the new stadium. It has been used by Uberlândia EC as a home game venue since 1982. The association, founded in 1922 played in its history only a few seasons in the highest Brazilian league, the Series A . The greatest success of the club is a first place in the Série B , the second highest league, in 1984. In addition, they won the state championship of Minas Gerais twice , but at the second highest level. Uberlândia EC currently plays in the fourth Brazilian soccer league, the Série D , but it is not one of the best teams there.

The attendance record at Estádio Municipal João Havelange dates back to 1982, when Brazil and Ireland played the opening game and 80,000 people came to the stadium. At the time of the opening, the admitted crowd was 72,733. After renovations in 2009, the capacity of the Estádio Municipal João Havelange dropped to 50,000 seats. The Olympic Stadium from 2016 in Rio de Janeiro , the Estádio Olímpico João Havelange , which is used by Botafogo FR, also bears the name Havelanges . Uberlândia EC supporters also know the Estádio Municipal João Havelange as Parque do Sabiá , as this was the name of the stadium until 1995 and the current one is not very popular with Uberlândia fans.
