from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ester Ringnér-Lundgren (* 4. October 1907 as Ester Maria Ringnér in Norrkoping , Sweden ; † 26. July 1993 ) was a Swedish writer who in Scandinavia and Germany especially for her in Troll milieu playing children's books and their Lotta - Youth book series was known. Her 140 books were aimed mainly at a younger, female audience, but were largely free of clichés and instead convinced with their inclusion of contemporary and gender-spanning topics. Ester Ringnér-Lundgren also published under the pseudonyms Merri Vik , Kaj Ringnér and Beril Björk .

Life

Ester Ringnér-Lundgren was born in Norrköping on October 4, 1907 as the daughter of Captain Birger Ringnér and his wife Johanna. The father sometimes took the whole family with him on ship voyages that even took them to St. Petersburg and, during the First World War, also took them along the dangerously mined Swedish coast. Shortly before the father's retirement, the family moved to Malmköping .

After graduating from the primary school teacher training college in 1927, she decided to put her youthful dream of becoming a writer into practice. As a result, several of her stories appeared in Swedish daily newspapers such as Svenska Dagbladet or Dagens Nyheter . Over the years she worked at several elementary schools in Rosersberg and Norrköping, where she met her future husband, Kurt Lundgren. As a result, the couple moved to Mariestad and then to Solna . Her first independent book publication in B. Wahlströms bokförlag was Kvirre och Hoppsan in 1951 , with which she first described the fairy tale world of goblins and trolls. The Trulsa and Pysselite series, which were used for teaching reading in Swedish primary schools for decades , also played in this fairytale world . In addition, until the 1970s she was one of the few Swedish authors who also wrote juvenile detective novels.

Her most successful book series has been published since 1958 with the Lotta series ( Det är Lotta, förstås! ) Under the pseudonym Merri Vik , which ended in 1991 with the 47th volume Liselott, Lottas dotter ( Lise Lott, Lotta's daughter ). After her 100th book publication, she also visited the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1971 to present her complete works.

In Sweden she published 140 books with a total circulation of 3.5 million volumes, in Germany among others Alexander, der Ziegenbock , Klein Trulsa and Lotta / Lisa (Merri Vik). Her works have mostly appeared in Danish , Norwegian , Finnish , Icelandic and German , but have also been translated into other languages. Some new translations into Finnish took place in 2007.

Other pseudonyms used by her were Kaj Ringnér and Beril Björk .

criticism

A study Birgitta Theanders from 2006 to the contents of the girls books Ringnér-Lundgren 1945 to 1965 has, surprisingly, that the author treated less classical themes such simple problems or romantic love stories, but rather social class differences, and since the 1960s and globalization issues addressed . Even the promotion of the willingness of the rich elite to donate or social projects for the benefit of the disadvantaged are discussed in the books. In the future dreams of young people, not only traditional, but also modern and cross-gender job profiles appear .

Vivi Edström, Professor of Comparative Literature, criticized in 1980 the stereotypical, choppy expression of the literary figure Lotta , which would largely float on the surface.

However, according to Theander, this narrative technique was refined in the following years as with Astrid Lindgren , Elsa Nyblom , Claque or Christina Söderling-Brydolf to the classic humorous Swedish style of the youth novel, which has its origins up to Anne auf Green Gables by the Canadian author Lucy Maud Montgomery would be established by 1908.
