Ettrick is a small settlement in the Central Otago District of the Otago Regionon the South Island of New Zealand .

Origin of name

The settlement got its name from the Scottish surveyor CW Adams , who came from the place Ettrick in Scotland .

geography

The place is about 12 km south of Roxburgh and one kilometer west of the Clutha River . The New Zealand State Highway 8 , which runs through the settlement, connects Ettrick with Roxburgh in the north and the small settlement Millers Flat in the south.

Like many other settlements in the area, the town's streets are named after towns in the Scottish Borders .

history

Ettrick was founded by Scottish settlers during the Otago gold rush in the 1860s and named after the Ettrick Valley in Scotland . Ettrick was one of the first places in New Zealand to grow apples. Today the main industries are sheep and cattle, and a dwindling number of fruit growers who mainly grow apples.

McEttrick Museum

New Zealand's only museum that the communities of the McDonald's theme, is located under the name " McEttrick " in and boasts of the most McDonald's -Paraphernalien in the southern hemisphere.

Alan Garthwaite , collector and owner of the museum, has been collecting McDonald's items such as hamburger wrappers, mugs, hats, toys, clocks, badges, dolls and clothing, some of which are 40 years old, for over 25 years.
