Eugen Roth (born December 16, 1925 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ; † March 25, 2011 there ) was a German painter and sculptor . He was particularly active in the field of computer graphics and computer art .

Life

Eugen Roth learned early on, while attending grammar school in Ludwigshafen, to model in a sculptor's atelier and learned the molding technique from a plasterer friend of his. In 1942 and 1943 he created numerous clay portraits in a studio that his father, an electrical engineer, had set up for him. From 1943 to 1945 he was a soldier in France, returned badly injured to Ludwigshafen and worked on his war experiences in a series of watercolors in the Expressionist style .

From 1947 to 1948 he studied at the State School for Arts and Crafts in Saarbrücken with Boris Kleint and Karl Lorenz Kunz . Eugen Roth was a representative of concrete art .

From 1948 to 1951 Roth created material pictures and monotypes , developed techniques for painting with indanthrene colors . Together with his wife Hilde Roth he dealt with art + fashion, was involved in the Kunstverein Ludwigshafen and in the literary cabaret ' Die Schmiere ', Frankfurt / Main. 1950–1952 Construction of his studio house according to his own designs in close consultation with Egon Eiermann's students in a Bauhaus-like style. From 1953 he made pictures of steel structures in front of colored backgrounds and entire murals, from 1956 he and his wife also took on commissioned artistic work for international industrial fairs. In 1968 he was one of the founding members of the group parallel . He was also a member of the Rhein-Neckar Artists Association and the Palatinate Artists Working Group (APK). In 1970 he began to produce the first spatial structure sculptures from stainless steel tube modules. Since 1990, inspired by Herbert W. Franke , Roth has been intensively concerned with the computer as a tool for painting. After first attempts, he started painting digital pictures and computer graphics in 1998 . With his works, Eugen Roth clearly distinguished himself from other artists who deal with computer art or digital art - the representatives of "computational art". Because his works are not a product of graphically represented equations, but he still painted his pictures, but on the screen.

Eugen Roth was married to Hilde Roth since 1947 . He has a daughter, Christel Burghard-Wörfel .

Motivation and message

The 20th and 21st centuries are characterized by ever advancing technology in all areas of life. An artist and his art are shaped by the time in which they live. As a result, the artist and his art today have to orientate themselves towards technology and deal with it.

»If we want to value works of the fine arts as messages from the artist to the viewer, and that is exactly what they are according to their function, then I see the point of my work in making a contribution to the understanding of the technical-scientific developments of our time - and conversely, to draw the attention of scientists and technicians to the aesthetic aspects of their field of work. « - Eugen Roth

Beginning in the 1960s, the computer found its way into the life of the individual with increasing intensity; it supports or replaces the tools used by humans. The computer replaces z. B. canvas and brushes and other tools and aids. The computer becomes the artist's tool for his art.

“The computer is one of the most used tools of our day. How could art stop at him? For me, the digital capabilities of the computer systems have made them into constantly used tools, just like pens, brushes, paint, soldering irons and welding equipment. But beyond all other means, this technology enables me to implement my ideas in an overwhelmingly limitlessly fascinating way. I want to use that. ” - Eugen Roth
