Life and work

War memorial in Schmallenberg by Eugen Senge-Platten (1923)

Eugen Senge-Platten was born in Siedlinghausen in 1890. Senge-Platten spent his school days in Münster . There he attended elementary school, the cathedral school, the municipal high school and a modeling school. Then he began studying at the university there. After a year he broke off his studies in order to start training as a sculptor in Berlin in 1910 . After training at the Berlin Art Academy with Peter Breuer , he joined the Royal Clevesche FAR 43 as a war volunteer in 1914. After the end of the war, Senge-Platten returned to Münster to work there. Two years later he settled in Düsseldorf . There he rented a studio. In Düsseldorf he also met his future wife Alix Senge-Voss, a concert violinist from Petersburg. In 1923 Senge-Platten moved back to his home village, where he lived in seclusion. Because of the low demand for art, he ran a hand weaving mill there until 1934. In 1928 he married his partner Alix. She organized concerts with well-known musicians in her husband's studio. The so-called Siedlinghauser Kreis was created in this environment . This group, which was founded by the country doctor Schranz, included art experts, painters, writers, historians, lawyers, philosophers and local politicians. Contact was made with Konrad Weiß through the Freundeskreis , who had a great influence on the artist's works. Weiß, Schranz and Senge-Platten were friends. They went on cultural trips together. Senge-Platten was an officer during the Second World War. It was used in Italy and Africa. There he drew and watercolored his personal impressions. The war impressions also influenced the later years. Eugen Senge-Platten died on March 30, 1972 in Siedlinghausen. The Senge-Platten-Straße, in which the Catholic Church and the Siedlinghausen secondary school and the Siedlinghausen indoor swimming pool are affiliated, was named after him.
