Reviews and age ratings
Tim Lindemann from epd Film says about the picturesque property, where rich people with incurable diseases come together to die in peace and also Emilie and her sister Ines want to spend the last week of their lives , it seems like a mixture of Tolkien's Auenland and the pictures of a particularly high-priced lifestyle magazine. Lindemann goes on to say that it is a convincing storytelling idea that works so well mainly because the brilliant production design by Christian Goldbeck offers it an optimal setting: “The tasteful rooms and gardens are so perfectly and nicely furnished that they are subliminally another radiate a certain eeriness. ”In a shorter form, the narrative structure of the film would have worked better, according to Lindemann, but its remote, gently morbid mood alone makes Euphoria worth seeing.
The Tagesspiegel writes that even if this setting was designed after thirty minutes and from then on it was completely predictable what will happen in the remaining seventy minutes, Euphoria couldscore with three large female parts. It is also remarkable how unsentimental the tone and how morally free the perspective on euthanasia is.
In Germany it was approved by the FSK from the age of 12, but allowed from the age of 6 if accompanied by the parents. The statement of reasons for the release states: “The story about family , death and self-determination is staged in stylized and sometimes fairytale-like images. [...] The mysterious-melancholy atmosphere with the constantly present theme of death and individual dramatic scenes can emotionally overwhelm children under 12 years of age. Due to their level of development and their media experience, 12-year-olds are able to put these aspects into context. The calm and clear fictionality of the film enable them to distance themselves sufficiently and to process the film without being overwhelmed. "
