Euphronia is the only genus of the family of Euphroniaceae within the order of Malpighienartigen (Malpighiales).

distribution

All Euphronia species are endemic to the Guiana shield (Steyermark & Marcano-Berti 1999).

description

The Euphronia species are evergreen trees . The alternate and spirally arranged leaves are simple with hairy underside. The leaf margins are rolled up. The underside of the stipules is tomentose white.

The flowers are arranged in terminal paniculate inflorescences . The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with double perianth . There is a short flower cup (hypanthium). The five unequal sepals are only fused at their base. The three petals are free. There are two opposite pairs of fertile stamens of unequal length ; there is also a long staminode and one to five other short, tooth-shaped staminodes. The stamens form a short tube and fused with the petals. The three carpels are a syncarp, Upper permanent ovary grown.

The capsule fruits contain winged seeds.

Systematics

Synonyms of Euphronia Mart. & Zucc. are: Lightia R.H. Schomb . and Lightiodendron Rauschert .

The genus Euphronia was earlier in the family of the Vochysiaceae A.St.-Hil. , which belongs to the order of the Myrtales . The Euphroniaceae family was first published in 1989 by Luis Marcano-Berti and confirmed by molecular genetic studies by Litt & Chase in 1999. The Euphroniaceae family is related to the Trigoniaceae , Dichapetalaceae , Balanopaceae and especially Chrysobalanaceae R.Br. Near.

In the genus of Euphronia and thus in the family of Euphroniaceae there are only three species:

  • Euphronia acuminatissima Steyerm. : It occurs from eastern Colombia to Venezuela.
  • Euphronia guianensis (RHSchomb.) H. Hallier : It occurs from southeastern Venezuela to western Guyana .
  • Euphronia hirtelloides Mart. (Syn .: Euphronia licanioides (Spruce ex Warm.) Hallier f. , Lightia licanioides Spruce ex Warm. ): It occurs from southeastern Colombia to northern Brazil.
