The Euro-Mediterranean-Arab Länderverein (short: EMA eV) is a German association that is committed to cooperation between Europe, with a focus on Germany, and the Mediterranean and Middle East regions . It deals with business, political, scientific and social issues. The organization has its headquarters in Hamburg , an office in Berlin and cooperates with offices in Casablanca (Morocco), Tunis (Tunisia) and Amman (Jordan). The EMA sees the political change in the countries of the Arab revolution as an opportunity to improve German-Arab cooperation.

History and organization

The association was founded in 2008 as the Euro-Mediterranean Association for Cooperation and Development on the initiative of Abdelmajid Layadi. In 2014 the association was renamed and has been called the Euro-Mediterranean-Arab Association since then. Former German President Christian Wulff was President of the Association from 2014 to 2017 . General Secretary is Clara Gruitrooy. Prince Hassan bin Talal of Jordan has been Honorary President of the Länderverein since January 2012, Christian Wulff since August 2017.

tasks and goals

The primary task and goal of the politically, ideologically and denominationally independent organization is to promote and strengthen economic relations and intercultural dialogue between Europe - and here in particular Germany - and the Mediterranean and Middle East region and between the countries in this region (South South cooperation). The topics of energy efficiency, resource management, water, the environment, health, logistics, infrastructure and agribusiness are of particular importance to the EMA. The organization specifically supports German companies in entering the market, but also in expanding their business activities in the countries of the EMA region, emphasizing a holistic approach to economic sustainability: for example, promoting water and energy management to protect natural resources , good and responsible corporate governance and know-how transfer as well as education and training of qualified young professionals, equality and respect for diversity with regard to society as a whole.

In 2014, the statutes were expanded to include CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) . This serves as an ethical maxim. In terms of corporate ethics and the social responsibility of development and economic associations, the EMA sees it as its task to implement the principles of the Global Compact formulated by the United Nations , the "Principles for Responsible Investment" (PRI) and the so-called To make corporate social responsibility conventions binding values ​​for their activities. In this way, it claims to live up to its responsibility to make a contribution to sustainable development in international cooperation.

In order to guarantee the long-term nature of the partnerships, the EMA attaches particular importance to a deeper understanding between the cultural realities of German and Arab societies. It regularly organizes intercultural training in order to meet this requirement and to promote not only economic but also social and cultural exchange.

The EMA sees cultural diversity and the growing together of cultural areas as enrichment. The EMA is committed to promoting sustainable industry and business and, in particular, to promoting women in business. It is also committed to the respectful use of natural resources, corporate social responsibility and good governance, as well as the economic participation of all social groups.

EMA forums

In order to strengthen the link between German and Arab entrepreneurs, the EMA organizes important cross-sector and cross-border specialist forums on various key topics such as water, the environment, logistics and the promotion of women in business in Germany and other countries. The events usually take place in cooperation with relevant institutions from business and politics. The interdisciplinary EMA forums are considered a space for knowledge exchange and the establishment of long-term strategic partnerships.

The 3rd German-Arab water forum of the EMA took place from May 31 to June 2, 2015 under the motto "Refugee pressure and the water sector - transforming an area of ​​confrontation into one of economic cooperation" in Amman (Jordan). Under the patronage of Prince Hassan bin Talal and under the direction of Christian Wulff, the German delegation advised high-ranking representatives from business, politics and science on the challenge of water scarcity in Arab countries and the possibilities of cooperation to improve the water supply.

Business delegations

The business delegations as an offer from the EMA to its members serve to provide information about the market and to intensify business contacts between German companies and those of the target country. By visiting companies and trade fairs in the target country, German companies are introduced to the respective market and informed about important economic and political features as well as sales opportunities.

Salon Diplomatique

As part of the EMA Academy, events on North Africa and the Middle East take place at regular intervals to shed light on the different perspectives of the EMA countries. In a stylish atmosphere, high-ranking diplomatic representatives from the EMA region will discuss the situation in their respective countries as well as the specific framework conditions and new opportunities for German companies.

The German-Arab women's project Ouissal

Ouissal ( "Bridge" or "Connection") is one of the Secretary General of the EMA, Clara Gruitrooy, at the request of the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth , and with the support of the Foreign Office and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development launched called German-Arab mentoring project for women entrepreneurs. It is characterized by the transformation partnership and was initiated to strengthen the economic and social participation of women. The project is aimed at women from Germany, Tunisia and Morocco with the aim of sustainable economic empowerment .

Another service that the association offers its members is information about current business tenders. The relevant database is updated daily. Further information provided on the website includes country profiles and a great deal of additional information about the countries in the region.

Publications

The association publishes the business magazine Mediterranes , which deals with current and future developments in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions and shows achievements as well as best practice examples . Each issue highlights a specific topic from the broad spectrum of future-oriented topics such as the environment, water, logistics, infrastructure and trade, as well as politics and diplomacy in North Africa and the Middle East, and also focuses on a priority country. The aim is to emphasize what connects people, markets and institutions in and with the countries concerned. Thanks to the range of topics and authors from science, business, politics and culture, a broad readership is addressed.

A German and English language newsletter is also published for all members and interested parties, which informs about past and future projects and events as well as other relevant activities of the EMA.

Members

The EMA is one of the largest national associations in Hamburg, with a focus on small and medium-sized companies in the areas of waste and (waste) water management, finance and investment, logistics and infrastructure as well as renewable energies. In addition, the EMA maintains various cooperation agreements, including with the chambers of commerce in Annaba (Algeria) and Casablanca (Morocco) and with the Union des Jeunes Euro-Maghrébins (UJEM).
