The European Forum for Migration Studies (spelling : European forum for migration studies (efms) ) was a social science research institute at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg . Between 1993 and 2019, the efms carried out research on migration and integration issues in Germany and Europe.

aims

Founded in 1993, the efms was one of the first German research institutes in the field of migration and integration . The motivation behind the establishment of the institute was to establish continuous research on these topics and to develop the relevant skills and capacities for practice-oriented research and policy advice. The goals of the efms were in particular to improve knowledge about migration and integration processes, to support the exchange of knowledge between research, administration, politics and the public and thus to contribute to the improvement of migration and integration policy in Germany and Europe.

working area

Research projects

The efms worked on research and service projects in the following areas:

In the development phase, the institute concentrated on migration research. In the second half of the 1990s, efms developed the concept of migration reporting for Germany and, based on a resolution by the German Bundestag , created the migration report in the following years. Research projects on migration theory and irregular migration were added. Later, research was also carried out at the efms on, for example, the immigration of highly qualified people .

The topics of integration, discrimination and evaluation expanded the work spectrum of the efms. It researched the integration of migrants, supports municipalities in the development of integration policy concepts and creates scientific analyzes on racism , xenophobia , discrimination and asylum , among others for the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency and the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights . Furthermore, the efms took part in the development of social media for participatory policy-making. In addition, the efms accompanied and evaluated integration projects and programs of state governments, cities and foundations. As an institutional member of the DeGEval - Society for Evaluation, the efms observed the DeGEval standards for evaluation .

European orientation

A European orientation was central to the work of the institute in all projects. The efms was a member of several European networks:

  • IMISCOE Research Network (International Migration, Integration and Social Cohesion in Europe)
  • FRANET, the multidisciplinary research network of the European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights
  • RED (Rights, Equality and Diversity) European Network Combating Racism & Xenophobia
  • EMN (European Migration Network)
  • European network of Cities for Local Integration Policies for Migrants (CLIP)

Structure and sponsorship

The efms was founded by the social scientists Friedrich Heckmann and Wolfgang Bosswick as well as the lawyers Viktor Foerster and Walter J. Weber as an institute at the Otto-Friedrich-Universität Bamberg . The sponsor of the efms was the non-profit association European Forum for Migration Studies . The efms was scientifically managed by Friedrich Heckmann, Wolfgang Bosswick acted as managing director.

After a phase of start-up funding from the Foundation for Population, Migration and Environment BMU (Zurich), the efms was financed primarily through third-party projects. Clients are u. a. EU institutions, the federal and state governments, municipalities and foundations. In March 2019, the institute ceased operations due to insufficient financial support.
