Contributions to migration and integration research

After working in the field of socialization and family research as well as on the history of sociology , Heckmann's research and teaching activities focused on the field of migration and integration research with the habilitation thesis (Die Bundes Republik: Ein Immanderungsland? Klett-Cotta, Stuttgart 1981) . The membership status of the so-called guest workers and their families was shown by means of socio-structural analyzes and, with the help of international and historically comparative work, it was proven early on that the Federal Republic had become a country of immigration. In conceptual and theoretical work, Heckmann developed a theory of ethnic minorities , the concept of the ethnic colony , dimensions of the social integration of migrants and building blocks for the theory of prejudices as attitudes and social ideologies . In the 1992 work, also used as a textbook , Ethnic Minorities, People and Nation . Sociology of Inter-Ethnic Relations (Enke Verlag Stuttgart 1992) these theoretical works are presented systematically. In 2015 Heckmann published the book “Integration of Migrants. Immigration and New Nation-Building ”, an overall presentation of integration research, which is aimed at students, practitioners in administration and civil society as well as an interested public.

Since the founding of the efms , Heckmann has led numerous empirical research and practice-related projects and has been involved in research. They are in the area of migration theory , migration reporting , migration policy , nationality , integration in cities, integration in the education system , discrimination and the evaluation of practical measures (see link on efms.de for more details). A large part of the projects is carried out in European cooperation .

He is a member of the Migration Council .

Integration - one process

Heckmann defined the social process of integration as follows: " Integration is the acquisition of membership by immigrants in the institutions, social relationships and social milieus of the host society. Integration as a process of becoming a member and harmonizing living conditions develops gradually along the dimensions of structural, cultural, Social and identificative integration. It requires integration efforts by the migrants and requires openness and support on the part of the host society . It is therefore a reciprocal, if not balanced process that runs over generations . Integration as a condition and result should mean full and equal social membership of an immigrant group in the host society and the living conditions have adjusted. Ethnic origin and migration background play for resource allocation and structuring ung social relations no longer matter. "

Heckmann explains the four dimensions of integration as follows:

  • Structural integration: The actual participation in the institutions, especially education , professional qualifications , labor market , legal status.
  • Cultural integration: processes related to learning cognitive skills and knowledge of the culture of the immigrant country. This applies particularly to language ; also cultural practices.
  • Social integration: social contacts and group memberships of the individual. This applies to friendships, club memberships, marriages.
  • Identificative (also: identificative) integration: Subjective feelings and definition of a person's belonging to an ethnic or national community.
