The European Gymnasium Waldenburg ( EGW for short ) is a state-recognized, privately owned substitute school in the former royal seat of Waldenburg in Saxony .

history

General

In 1994, the sponsoring association Europäische Gymnasium Waldenburg e. V. founded the building originally built for the Princely Schönburg Teachers' College .

In 1998, 40 years after the high school closed, another school year in Waldenburg was able to take their Abitur. In the same year the Free Youth Art School was founded, which teaches in the rooms in the east wing.

building

The building, inaugurated in 1844, initially housed the Princely Schönburg Teachers' College . In 1922 a secondary school for talented primary school students was established, which in 1923 became the Fürstlich Schönburgische Deutsche Oberschule with advanced school , and in 1937 it was renamed the state secondary school for boys .

During the Second World War , school operations were severely restricted and the building was used as a hospital . Despite various attempts by parents by submitting submissions to the state organs, it was not possible until 1945 to ensure that the school was fully operational. This was only resumed in October 1945 with two unencumbered teachers and several new teachers .

From 1953 to 1958, a high school and an institute for teacher training were located in the current school buildings. After that, a pedagogical school for kindergarten teachers was housed here until 1990, popularly known as the pudding school . A technical school for social pedagogy resided on the site for a short time . In 1994 the sponsoring association Europäische Gymnasium Waldenburg e. V. took over the area and founded the European Gymnasium Waldenburg .

School profile

The aim of the grammar school is the individual advancement of every single student. In grades 8 to 10, three profiles are offered to choose from: the linguistic, the sociological-economic and the musical-artistic profile.

The guiding principle is: "Learning can still be fun!"

In the linguistic profile, training takes place in three foreign languages during lessons - you can choose from English, Latin, Spanish, French, Russian and Czech. This profile is supported by the fact that high school students from all over the world are taught by teachers from numerous countries. In addition, there are annual excursions and additional trips to countries such as Ireland , France , Spain and Luxembourg in the lower secondary level . For some time now, students in grade 10 have had the opportunity to visit the following countries if they are interested: USA, People's Republic of China, Vietnam and South Africa. The costs incurred are partly borne by the school. For grade 7 there is a ski camp in Austria on the Postalm near Salzburg. In addition, every student from grade 7 can take part in a skiing holiday on the Postalm during the winter holidays, whereby the parents of the students have to bear the costs themselves.

From the 5th to the 10th grade, everyone is taught computer science , which is only provided for in the 7th grade in the Saxon curriculum.

In lower secondary level, the class size is set at a maximum of 22 students. There is a wide range of courses in upper secondary level , as even the smallest groups are set up where possible.

Today's buildings

school

The west and east wings as well as the central building form the school building, in which all classrooms, specialist cabinets, other classrooms as well as the auditorium and canteen are located.

With the auditorium, the west wing of the school building has a large, sonorous room, the jewel of which is the restored organ . Numerous events take place here, for example concerts by the chamber choir . The chamber choir and the ensuing chamber orchestra use this room, for example, for a Christmas concert. The chamber choir also performs at other concerts under the direction of Dagmar Hanf.

Boarding school

The boarding school is located directly on campus and offers students the option of living in single rooms. It was completely renovated in 2011. The support is provided by trained staff. The students in the boarding school get full board. This includes breakfast and multiple choices for lunch and dinner. In the afternoon, supplies are tailored to the needs of the students.
