The Europa-Union Berlin eV ( EUB ) is a regional association of the Europa-Union Germany . As the regional association of the European Union in Germany, the EUB is part of the largest pro-European citizens' association in Germany. The members are non-partisan , non- denominational and independent for a federally structured European Union .

The Europa-Union Berlin was founded in West Berlin in 1949. Your sphere of activity is the state of Berlin with its districts and neighborhoods . Your youth association is the Young European Movement Berlin-Brandenburg (JEB).

Statutory objectives and tasks

The Europa-Union Berlin is committed to the "political and economic unification of the European peoples" ( international understanding ). Its aim is to promote a federal and democratic , constitutional Europe within the framework of the European movement . To this end, it organizes information events, seminars, discussion groups and educational trips. In discussions with political decision-makers, associations and institutions, she promotes her political demands. The Europa-Union Berlin is a registered, non-profit association with its headquarters in Berlin-Mitte. The EUB is not a party. Members are natural and legal persons.

Club work

The highest decision-making body is the annual general meeting. Board elections take place every two years.

As the regional association of the European Union Germany, the EUB regularly sends delegates to committee meetings of the federal association. Members of the Europa-Union Berlin are also active as delegates to the Union of European Federalists at the European level .

Political demands and campaigns

On the basis of the program of the Europa-Union Deutschland, Europa-Union Berlin has contributed to public debates with initiatives. In March 2017 she was one of the organizers of the “March for Europe”. Over 4,000 people took part in the demonstration in the center of Berlin, which set an example to strengthen European unification and against nationalism.

In the debate about an additional public holiday in Berlin , the EUB advocated declaring Europe Day a national holiday .

Under the motto #EuropaMachen, the EUB called on Berliners to make use of their right to vote and to take part in the 2019 European elections.

The Europa-Union Berlin relies on various event formats to convey European policy content. Due to the contact restrictions required due to the corona pandemic , the EUB organizes its events digitally.

Embassy talks

Berlin, as the seat of diplomatic missions of the EU member states, enables exchange with ambassadors. The six-monthly rotating EU Council Presidency is the reason for the format of the ambassadorial talks. In it, the representatives of the presiding countries present the priorities of the Council Presidency.

Cafe Europa

The EUB invites you to information events with a monthly jour fixe . Current topics that deal with regional or state-level European work are taken up and discussed with experts from organizations and administrations. In the run-up to the 2019 European elections, the Europa-Union Berlin invited the Berlin candidates to a candidate duel. Members and interested citizens were able to find out more about the candidates and their main topics.

"Europe is here!"

Together with the Berlin State Center for Civic Education and the Senate Department for Culture and Europe , the EUB invites its members and the interested public to the "Europe is here" dialogue event. The aim of the annual event is to present the relevance and immediacy of European integration in the everyday life of Berliners. In addition, Berlin MEPs and representatives of other organizations will have their say and exchange with the guests. In the past, topics such as organized crime in Europe, European voluntary work , Brexit , or EU refugee policy were discussed.

European evening

Together with the DBB Beamtenbund and Tarifunion , the federal network for citizenship , the representation of the European Commission in Germany and the European Union Germany , the EUB has been organizing a European evening twice a year since 2006. In addition to the content-related contributions from politics and business, a "market of opportunities" in the foyer of the dbb forum Berlin offers the opportunity to get to know and become active in European politics in Berlin. The 30th European Evening took place in October 2019.

European competition

The European Competition is a nationwide school competition sponsored by the European Movement Germany , in which schoolchildren deal independently and creatively with European policy issues.

The Europa-Union Berlin supports the European competition at state level. The Europa-Union organizes the award ceremony for the award-winning Berlin students. With this, the European Union honors the artistic and creative work of the students. The aim of the competition is to promote the European idea, to consolidate Europe in the curriculum and to critically examine European politics.

Young European Movement Berlin-Brandenburg

The Young European Movement Berlin-Brandenburg (JEB) is the youth organization of the Europa-Union Berlin and part of the Young European Federalists . Members of the JEB up to the age of 35 can also be members of the EUB with voting rights. The JEB organizes the annual simulation game Simulation European Parliament (SIMEP) in the Berlin House of Representatives , dialogue events and project-related European work.

Active and member network

The Europa-Union Berlin has a network of active members and members from and in Berlin society, politics, science, administration and institutions. In 2020, new EUB members belonged to the Berlin House of Representatives , three from the German Bundestag and three from the European Parliament .

As a co-opted member of the board, the former head of the permanent representation of Germany to the EU , Dietrich von Kyaw , advises the work of the state board. Rainer B. Giesel has been honorary chairman of the Europa-Union Berlin since 1987 .
