The Evangelical Church in Leutershausen , a district of Hirschberg on Bergstrasse in the Rhein-Neckar district in northwest Baden-Württemberg , was built in the 18th century. The tower dates from the 14th century.

history

A church in Leutershausen was mentioned as early as 877. It was recorded in a document that Count Liuther gave the "basilica" to the Lorsch Monastery . The place probably belonged to the parish of Hohensachsen at first until its own parish was established. In the Middle Ages the branches of Heiligkreuz , Rittenweier , Rippenweier , Oberflockenbach , Steinklingen , Wünschmichelbach , Ursenbach and part of Greater Saxony belonged to the Leutershausen parish. The right to appoint the pastor lay with the Archdiocese of Mainz , the successor to the Lorsch Monastery, until it passed to the Worms Cathedral Chapter in 1484 . In 1550 the church set was sold to the Lords of Hirschberg .

In the Worms Synod of 1494, the patronage of John the Baptist was mentioned for the first time . In 1556, Elector Ottheinrich introduced the Reformation in the Electoral Palatinate , and the community had to follow the frequent changes of denomination afterwards. In 1698 the Catholic Elector Johann Wilhelm ordered the simultaneous use of the church by Reformed and Catholics. When the Palatinate church was divided up in 1705, the church in Leutershausen fell to the Reformed, but the pastor concluded a contract with the Count von Wiser who continued to let the Catholics keep the separated choir until they built their own church.

In 1777 the dilapidated church was torn down except for the tower. The plans for the new building probably came from Franz Wilhelm Rabaliatti . On June 22, 1783 the first service was celebrated in the new church. In 1811/12 the church tower was given its current roof after the old, Gothic spire fell in a strong storm in 1756. Disputes continued for longer over the choir that the Catholics claimed. It was not until 1814 that the Reformed community acquired the site. The present choir was added in 1897/98 according to plans by Hermann Behaghel . The church was renovated in 1935, 1973 and 1994/95.

Bells

In 1812 three bells were cast by Barthels in Frankfurt. Two of them had to be delivered in the First World War. The bells bought as replacements had to be handed in during World War II. In 1950 four new bells were purchased from Bachert ( Bad Friedrichshall ). The bell is coordinated with the Catholic Church . The surviving Barthels bell from 1812 serves as a death bell.
