Evangelical Church of Kleinkems

The Evangelical Church of Kleinkems is located in the district of Kleinkems in the southern Baden community of Efringen-Kirchen . There has been evidence of a church in the place since the 11th century.

history

The first documentary evidence of a church in Kleinkems goes back to a deed of donation in 1086 when a Hesso donated land and half of a chapel in Kleinkems to the St. Georgen Monastery. The chapel probably even had Romanesque origins. The entire chapel belonged to the monastery in the Black Forest until 1179 and kept it in their possession until 1536. The patronage of St. George, who is mentioned in writing in 1421 “to Kemps sant Jorgen uff dem Ryne”, was probably connected with the Georgskloster .

During the Gothic period , the Kleinkemser chapel was extended to the north and the choir moved across from the nave. The structural condition of the church deteriorated over the centuries. It is said that in 1559 the inhabitants asked the margrave to repair the damage. An inventory from 1749 complained that the choir was damaged and that it was raining in and that the windows also needed improvement.

In 1898 a square bell tower was placed in front of the west facade to replace a roof turret that existed before 1828.

description

Church building

The church in Kleinkems consists of a rectangular long house that has a gable roof is covered which the chorus is hipped. At the west gable is a square bell tower that protrudes slightly over the nave. On the middle floor, in addition to a narrow, ogival window, there is also a two-part window above it. On the upper floor it is built in a half-timbered construction that is atypical for the region . On each side there is a sound arcade and a square clock face of the tower clock. The tower is covered by a four-sided pyramid roof , which is slightly bent in the lower third. He wears a tower ball and a cross at the end.

The church stands on a rock slightly elevated in the center of Kleinkems.

Interior and outfit

The single-nave church is drawn in with a flat ceiling. A gallery on which the organ is placed rises above the entrance . The nave and choir are separated by a triumphal arch . There is a pulpit to the right of the arch. In the long sides of the choir there are choir stalls on both sides and the simple altar on a small podium at the top. Also in the choir is the niche of the saints and the sacrament shrine, both of which are believed to date from the 15th century.

An epitaph on the north wall of the choir reminds of Jakob von Rotberg († November 24, 1623), on the south wall of Franz Daniel von Rotberg († October 9, 1733) and Maria Salome Kummer, nee. Meierin (Meyer) († November 19, 1679), the first wife of pastor Johann Martin Kummer.

The original organ by Franz Josef Merklin, which was built between 1828 and 1830, was initially handed over to Gaienhofen . Since it was not used there, it is now used as a choir organ in the town church of Schopfheim St. Michael .

Today's organ by GF Steinmeyer was installed in the northern gallery in 1959. It works with a mechanical action and has a manual , a pedal and six registers .
