The Protestant parish church is a listed church building in Sonneborn , a district of Barntrup in the Lippe district in North Rhine-Westphalia . Church and congregation belong to the Evangelical Reformed class Bösingfeld of the Lippe regional church .

History and architecture

The small hall church of two yokes was built around 1300. The rectangular choir is as wide as the hall, and the compact, massive tower is also kept the width of a ship . The exterior of the facility is simple. The Lords of Kerssenbrock were the patron saints of the church until 1564 , their coat of arms hangs over the south entrance. The walls are structured by tracery windows. A flat-edged barrel vault with lancet caps rests on low console caps and spans the interior. The choir is accessible from the nave by a pointed archsevered. There is a domed vault in the ground floor hall of the tower .

Image program

During a renovation from 1953 to 1954, an extensive picture program from the Reformation period , which was unique in Westphalia and was created after 1564, was uncovered. It consists of three picture cycles. The passion of Christ is depicted in the vaulted spandrels of the nave . On the walls of the ship you can see examples of the ten commandments based on catechism illustrations from the Reformation period . The spandrels of the choir vault show the prayers of the Our Father . A small Last Judgment can be seen on the east side of the choir arch , in the tower hall the giant Goliath and the sacrifice of Isaac . In September 2013, the wall and vault paintings were named Monument of the Month in Westphalia-Lippe .
