Evangelical Church Wehdem
The Evangelical Church in the Stemweder village of Wehdem is the parish church of the Evangelical Lutheran Parish Wehdem, which belongs to the Lübbecke parish of the Evangelical Church of Westphalia .
The church was built in the 19th century and is a rarity in Westphalia as a classical preaching church .
history
The first documented construction of a church in Wehdem was commissioned in 1330 by the Minden Bishop Ludwig von Braunschweig-Lüneburg . However, a church must have existed before that, possibly as early as the 10th century.
The Gothic church, built in 1330, collapsed in 1801, so that a new building was necessary. The present church was completed in 1803, initially without a tower for financial reasons . This was built from 1853 to 1855 on the west side after the Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV donated money for the construction.
architecture
The nave consists of a rectangular hall with central risalits to the north and south, resulting in a cross-shaped floor plan. There is a roof turret on the southern risalit .
Furnishing
The transverse orientation of the sermon hall is unusual for the region: the altar is on the south side, the pulpit above it. There are galleries on the west and east side and the organ on the north side . The function as a preaching church has been implemented in this way in the interior design .
Some parts of the furnishings are older than the church building: The organ front is baroque from the middle of the 17th century and originally comes from Minden Cathedral . The altar bears the year 1605.
