The first Humanité Festival took place in September 1930 in the Sacco and Vanzetti Park in Bezons . The aim was to increase the circulation of the then central organ of the French Communist Party ( PCF ) and to generate a surplus that would benefit the newspaper, as well as support striking miners. The success was initially modest, there were only about 1000 paying visitors.

The festival continued and in 1936, at the time of the Popular Front , the first major concerts took place. Over 300,000 visitors came. After an interruption due to the war, around a million people found themselves in the Bois de Vincennes in 1945 , where the festival was located up to and including 1956. Then it took place in different places in the area of the Banlieue rouge .

Today the festival is divided into different "rooms", with music stages, a "book village", stands of various political organizations and friendly left movements, art exhibitions, etc.
