description

Creeping cinquefoil
Nuts of the collective fruit with the style narrowed at the base

The creeping cinquefoil is a perennial herbaceous plant . All stems are creeping and rooted at the nodes . The runners reach a length of 30 to 100 centimeters. The species has a thin taproot that is up to 45 cm long. The long-stalked foliage leaves are fingered fivefold, from which the common name five -fingered herb (in ancient and medieval Greek pentafilon ) comes from, which can be traced back to the Middle Ages , and serrated on the edge.

The five-fold flowers contain five golden yellow petals . These stand individually on a long stem that usually protrudes over the leaves. The flower reaches a diameter of 17 to 20 millimeters. The stylus are narrowed at the base. The outer sepals are curved far outwards. Each bloom produces 200 to 240 nuts that ants spread.

Flowering time is from June to August.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 28 or 48.

Occurrence

The creeping cinquefoil is common in Eurasia. The nitrogen-loving plant thrives on moist meadows, moist ruderal corridors , ruderal rubble corridors (such as railway gravel), road embankments, banks and fields. In Valais it rises to 1750 m. In the Allgäu it reaches an altitude of 1520 meters on the Bolgenalpe in Bavaria west of Obermaiselstein .

The creeping cinquefoil thrives in societies of the Agropyro-Rumicion association, but also of the Arrhenatherion or Molinion associations.

Parasites

The gall wasp Xestophanes potentillae on Potentilla reptans

Brown, pea-sized galls on the root neck are caused by the gall wasp Xestophanes potentillae . Furthermore, the rust fungus Frommeëlla tormentillae , the powdery mildew Sphaerotheca aphanis and the downy mildew Peronospora potentillae-reptantis parasitize the creeping cinquefoil . As with other cinquefoil species, the cucumber Ramularia grevilleana also occurs on the creeping cinquefoil .

Taxonomy

The scientific name Potentilla reptans was first published in 1753 by Carl von Linné in Species Plantarum .
