The Főnix Hall ( Hungarian Debreceni Főnix Csarnok ) is a multi-purpose hall in the Hungarian city of Debrecen . It is named after the symbol of the city of Debrecen, the phoenix . Alongside the Papp László Budapest Sportaréna , it is the second largest arena in Hungary with 8,500 seats. The hall is connected underground with the Hódos Imre Sportcsarnok , the home ground of the women's handball team of the DVSC-Forum Debrecen .

The arena was built for the 2002 World Gymnastics Championships after the László Budapest Sportaréna, which was actually intended for it, could not be completed on the set date. Due to the lack of time, the plans for Saku Suurhall , which opened in 2001 in Tallinn , Estonia, were used and adapted to local conditions. The foundation stone was laid on February 18, 2002. Construction took eight months and was opened on time.
The Főnix Hall opened on a weekend in early October 2002. On October 4th, the Philharmonic Orchestra Kodály Filharmónia Debrecen and the dance group Duna Művészegyüttes gave a show during which Mayor Lajos Kósa opened the Debreceni Főnix Csarnok . On Saturday, the 5th of October, the Hungarian punched Zsolt Erdei in the light heavyweight division against the South Africans Jim Murray for the WBO -Interkontinental title. Erdei won the fight after knockout in the fifth of 12 rounds. At the end of the opening event, indoor football took place in the arena on Sunday . In the morning there was a tournament for children. In the evening there was a game between politicians and media representatives, reinforced by former professional footballers.
Since its opening, the building has been the venue for a wide variety of sporting events such as ice hockey , futsal , basketball , boxing , handball , tennis , dancing , ballet and short track .
