Klaus-Peter Rödig (born January 14, 1938 in Marburg an der Lahn ) is a German forester, forest scientist and honorary professor of forestry at the Justus Liebig University of Gießen who is released from teaching duties . From 1964 to 2003 he worked in various positions in the Hessian forest administration, most recently as head of the silviculture department in the Hessian Ministry for the Environment, Climate Protection, Agriculture and Consumer Protection in Wiesbaden . With the topics of ' sustainable multifunctional forestry ', 'natural silviculture' he emerged as a specialist in forest planning and forest development in forest practice, advanced training and academic teaching.

Life

Klaus-Peter Rödig was born on January 14, 1938 in Marburg an der Lahn. There he grew up with two younger brothers. After graduating from the Martin Luther School in Marburg in 1958 , after a selection process with admission to higher forestry service, a forest internship at the Altmorschen Forestry Office in North Hesse followed .

He then studied forest sciences from 1958 to 1962 at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg , graduating with a degree in forestry. With the dissertation Soil types and locations in the western Dinkelberg and on the western edge of the Weitenau foothills , he received his doctorate in 1964 at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics as a Doctor rerum naturalium .

In 1964 he married his wife Rosemarie Friederike, from whom a son and a daughter emerged. Klaus-Peter Rödig completed his legal clerkship (1964–1967) with the Great State Examination in Forestry. This was followed by the takeover in the state service of the State of Hesse, to which he belonged until his retirement in 2003; including 20 years at the Hessian Forestry Institution in Gießen and 15 years as head of department in the Hessian Ministry of the Environment in Wiesbaden . His teaching activity at the Justus Liebig University in Gießen (1978–2004) began with seminars, since 1984 he was a lecturer and in 1997 he was given the academic title of honorary professor . After his retirement he was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Laubach City Forest Foundation for ten years . In 2014 he was awarded the Georg Ludwig Hartig Prize for his services to sustainable forestry .

Professional activity

Hessian forest management

With his pedological-site orientation, Klaus-Peter Rödig was initially employed at the Hessian Forestry Institution as a forest site mapper in the Burgwald and the Hessian Slate Mountains ; There were also expert, training and staff support and finally the classic forest management tasks, forest function mapping, forest status assessment and medium-term forest management planning (forestry offices Wetter , Frankenberg , Burgwald , Battenberg , Altenlotheim , 1967-1970).

From 1971 to 1988, Klaus-Peter Rödig headed the newly created department “Forest management in corporate and private forests, yield regulation, public relations” with an associated subject area “Forest areas and maps” and inspection tasks in central and southern Hesse at the headquarters of the Hessian Forestry Institution. In this function he was able to influence the development of the Hessian forest management procedure and numerous structural changes in the organization, which were inevitable as a result of an amended forest law and the regional reform in Hesse:

  • First state forest management of the communal and community forest with a multifunctional planning process on an ecological basis. The first cycle for the approximately 350,000 hectare area was completed around 1988. (Results presented by August HENNE 1992)
  • Development and management of the mapping of the protective and recreational functions of the forest; as an atlas area protection map Hesse (1: 50,000) with an explanatory booklet
  • Digitization and automation of forest area information in forest management (1978).
  • Project development and management of a two-time area-wide recording of landscape damage; Maps (1: 50,000) published in 1971 and 1974 by the Hessian Ministry for the Environment.
  • Development and support of the landscape master plan as part of the regional spatial planning plans (1974).
  • Development and establishment of a long-term company comparison Natural forest management (synonym: near-natural forest management) of the state forests of the Fulda and Neuhof forest offices on a sample basis. A final report was published in 2009 (HESSEN-FORST, FENA (ed.), 2009, company comparison Fulda-Neuhof ).
  • Founding chairman of the forestry work group in the forest management work group. The first of his numerous publications was the guideline for forest function mapping, 2nd edition, 2003. This was followed by a guideline for forest framework planning (1977), which Rödig also co-authored.

Silviculture and the Environment

The supervision of the Hessische Forsteinrichtungsanstalt (FEA), the Hessische Forstliche Versuchsanstalt (HFV) and the Staatsdarre Wolfgang was connected with the management of the department “Silviculture, Forest Management, Forest Protection” (1988–2003). As a result of line vacancies at the HFV (1992/1993) and at the State Institute for Forest Management, Forest Research and Forest Ecology (HLFWW, 1997/1998), which later merged with the FEA, he took on the provisional management of these institutions for just under a year. Klaus-Peter Rödig found a wide field of activity, also across national borders. He also had enough opportunities to participate in the strategic direction of forest policy and to adapt forest practice to the changing framework conditions.

Silviculture in the state forest of the State of Hesse was converted to natural management by means of two basic decrees : GE 23/1989 Principles for silviculture in the Hessian state forest; GE 20/1989 Forest sites and forest structure elements with particular importance for species and biotope protection. The Hessian state forest thus had a state-wide forest management guideline for the first time and Hesse was the first state-sized state to consistently switch from lump-wise to natural forest management. Forest protection was also adjusted accordingly: with the introduction of an annual survey of pesticides, among other things, an extensive biocide waiver was gradually achieved; an annual survey of the peeling damage in the forest contributed to the operational adjustment of the game stands within the framework of changed hunting guidelines. New guidelines for the management of the state forest derived a concept of the ecological and economic strategies of the forestry operations from a stringent target system. The overall concept of near-natural economy a multi-launched was published in 1999 Hessian silviculture primer for use in the forestry practice A he also worked concept paper forest and conservation of the then responsible Minister of the Interior (1998), coordination should facilitate the work of departments Forestry and Nature Conservation.

In connection with the introduction of natural silviculture in Hesse, an extensive training and further education program was set up for all forest workers over a period of 10 years, which was very popular, not least because of the visits to exemplary forest companies in the other federal states. The special feature of the events was their careful preparation through intensive, scientifically founded processing of measured information about the respective forest stations visited.

Establishment of a natural forest reserve program based on a resolution of the Hessian State Parliament (1988), one of the special features of which was to observe and compare, in addition to larger total reserves, similar, but managed forest areas. A long-term fauna inventory was also unique in Germany - with a view to the later European FFH concept (Directive 91/43 / EEC) - for which the renowned Senckenberg research institute was able to be won and which produced remarkable results.

Even if the results of the forest damage surveys and, above all, the scientific findings of the Hesse forest ecosystem study provided clear evidence of the heavy pollution of the forest soils and thus their functions, the difficulties were great when one of the possible countermeasures was to initiate an ecologically secure concept for regular forest liming whose positive effects are generally and scientifically undisputed today.

With the severe storm damage in the spring of 1990 (Hurricane Vivian, Hurricane Wiebke), Klaus-Peter Rödig was also particularly challenged, since after the conversion of silviculture in such an exceptional case, the acid test of its practical suitability had to be passed. With lectures, forest company trips, excursions and publications, he established his later reputation as a “traveling preacher” or “forest missionary”.

In 2002, a new Hessian instruction for forest management work essentially edited by him summarized the concepts of sustainable forest development on an ecological basis for forest management planning, without thereby causing a break with the sustainability management methods that had existed since Georg Ludwig Hartig's time or endangering the comparability of the findings over the centuries.

With the reunification of Germany, Klaus-Peter Rödig, as chairman of the control committee of the German Control Association (today DKV Gütegemeinschaft), was given the task of introducing the certification of the best forest reproductive material in the new federal states. In cooperation with the forestry institutions there, the organizational structure of the association was adapted and the first round was largely completed in a ten-year focus of work.

With a similar aim, Klaus-Peter Rödig also chaired the Working Group Condition Assessment and Planning (1989–1994) and then headed the Standing Committee of the Forest Management Working Group (1994–2002); Both forums which, in addition to developing and coordinating methods of forest management, also endeavor to promote the relevant exchange of science and practice in German-speaking countries.

Teaching at the Justus Liebig University

Since joining the civil service, Klaus-Peter Rödig has not only been involved in the education and training of young foresters and forestry practitioners. He took advantage of the opportunity offered by the university to introduce various target groups to the particularities of forestry thinking and forestry at the agricultural faculty in the newly established environmental protection department. It was particularly important to him to present the global ecological framework, the geological and forest-historical processes in order to make the manifestations of today's forests understandable and to explain sustainable concepts for forest development based on scientific findings, especially ecology. His topics were "Site-appropriate silviculture", "Environmental impacts of the forest" and "Forestry planning".
