Freddie Young
Freddie Young, OBE ; also FA Young ; actually Frederick Archibald Young (born October 9, 1902 in London , England , † December 1, 1998 ibid) was a British cameraman and film director .
Life
Freddie Young literally grew up with the film. From the age of 15 he initially worked as a camera intern, lighting technician and errand boy behind the camera. For Maurice Elvey's The Flag Lieutenant (1926) he was the second cameraman and in 1928 he was the chief cameraman of the film Blue Bottles by Ivor Montagu . The following year Herbert Wilcox hired him for his company in Elstree, where Young worked until 1959. He has created a number of costume dramas with Anna Neagle directed by Wilcox, including Nell Gwyn (1934) and Victoria the Great (1937). He shot this film in color ( Technicolor ) for the first time in 1937 .
After serving as a weapon during World War II , he continued working on the camera and quickly became one of the best cameramen of his time. Young was nominated five times for an Oscar and finally won it three times. Young was the first president of the British Society of Cinematographers, founded in 1949 .
Young's best-known films include Ivanhoe - The Black Knight , Solomon and the Queen of Sheba , Lawrence of Arabia , Doctor Zhivago , and the Battle of Britain .
For the fifth James Bond film " You Only Live Twice " (!) He was on a shooting research for the motifs in Japan in 1966 . At the last minute, he canceled his BOAC flight 911 ticket and survived.
Although he would always have enjoyed directing, he was denied until 1986. Now at the age of 84, he directed the comedy film Arthur's Hallowed Ground for the first and only time .
Freddie Young was married twice. In 1927 he married the screenwriter and occasional actress Marjorie Gaffney (1897-1963), with whom he was married until her death in 1963. The two adopted two children. In 1964 he married the editing assistant Joan Morduch for the second time. The two had a biological child.
Freddie Young was just able to write his autobiography in autumn 1998 before he died at the age of 96.
