history

A selection of German parliamentarians first took to the field in 1961 in a charity game for social purposes against a selection of celebrities, reinforced by Fritz Walter at the time . After a few more games of this kind, a Bundestag soccer team was initiated in 1967 under the leadership of Adolf Müller-Emmert , which from then on met regularly for joint training. Müller-Emmert commented on this back then with the words "Football is the only joy we have in Bonn".

The first international football match against another parliamentary selection took place in 1971 against Switzerland . This culminated in an annual international parliamentarians football tournament , which is also known as the unofficial European championship of parliamentary teams . The FC Bundestag and selection teams from Austria , Switzerland and Finland have been taking part in the tournament for decades . The latter have finished the tournament as winners most often so far. In 2011, the German selection won this tournament for the last time. In 2013 the FC Bundestag came second, in 2014 in Vienna fourth.

At the general assembly on January 20, 2018, the FC Bundestag rejected the membership application of a member of the Bundestag for the first time. It was the request of the AfD parliamentarian Sebastian Munzenmaier . Hansjörg Müller's application for membership has been "put on hold". The AfD politicians Jörn König and Wolfgang Wiehle were accepted into the team, but did not appear once during training until June 2018. In May 2018 - after Müller's conversation with members Stephan Kühn and Mahmut Özdemir - Hansjörg Müller's application for membership was also rejected.

reception

Long-time team captain Klaus Riegert , who has played over 300 games for FC Bundestag, sees the team as "the most successful parliamentary group" and suspects that one of the recipes for success is that "everyone is equal in the shower".

In March 2012, rumors surfaced that Otto Rehhagel , who was trying to save Hertha BSC from relegation to the second Bundesliga at the time, had been persuaded by Thomas Oppermann to also coach the FC Bundestag. After corresponding media reports, both made it clear that Rehhagel would initially concentrate exclusively on his tasks as a Hertha coach and would be available as a guest coach at a later date.
