Little Gusen
The Kleine Gusen is one of the two source rivers of the Gusen in the Mühlviertel ( Upper Austria ). Its length is 27 km.
Landscape and run
The Kleine Gusen rises in the municipality of Hirschbach im Mühlkreis , near Hammerbichl near Tischberg . It first flows south-eastwards, from Neumarkt in the Mühlkreis southwards. After about 27 km it flows into the municipality of Katsdorf ( Gallneukirchner Becken ) with the Great Gusen and the river is only called Gusen for the remaining short distance.
Conservation and sights
The Kleine Gusen is mainly inhabited by brown trout and their typical accompanying fish and is largely unobstructed . As the valley of the Kleine Gusen , the water and the accompanying meadows and forests (black alder-ash forests, occasional near-natural oak-hornbeam slope forests) have been entered in the list of Natura 2000 protected areas since 2012 ( European protected area AT3108000 / NN08 ), a total of one area protected by 346.00 hectares. In addition, 30.50 hectares have been a landscape protection area since 2000 ( LSG07 ).
The route of the horse-drawn railway Budweis – Linz – Gmunden used to run between Unterweitersdorf and Neumarkt along the Kleiner Gusen, of which some buildings, bridges and threshold stones have been preserved. Today the horse-drawn railway trail leads along the route . In the 1970s, the Mühlkreis Autobahn (A7) was also planned to run through the valley, but was discarded for ecological and hydrological reasons.
