Vegetative characteristics

The false broad seed is an annual herbaceous plant that reaches heights of growth of only 5 to 20 centimeters. It is densely hairy and prostrate to ascending. The leaves are two to three times pinnate with egg-shaped sections.

Generative characteristics

The double-gold inflorescence consists of two to five rays of unequal length with two to five bracts with two to five cobs. The hermaphrodite flowers are fivefold. The petals are white to light purple in color, the outer ones are only slightly larger than the inner ones.

The fruits are elliptical with a length of 7 to 10 millimeters. Its lateral ribs have eight thorns widened at the base, the other ribs each have 18 narrow thorns.

The flowering period extends from April to July.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

Occurrence

The false broadame is in the Mediterranean in Morocco , Algeria , Tunisia , Libya , Egypt , on the Sinai Peninsula , in Portugal , Spain , on the Balearic Islands , in France , on Corsica , Sardinia , Sicily , Malta , in Italy , Montenegro , Albania , Greece , Crete , Aegean Islands, Cyprus , Turkey , Israel , Jordan , Lebanon and Syria . The false broadsame thrives on sandy beaches, on dunes and on sandy fields near the sea.
