The Fecht- und Sportgemeinschaft Ruhr Wattenscheid eV is a sports club from Bochum with departments for fencing , gymnastics and Frisian fighting . The FSG / RW is a member of the Westphalian Fencing Federation (WFB) and the Westphalian Gymnastics Federation (WTB).

Club history

The FSG / RW looks back on more than 50 years of fencing tradition and is one of the oldest fencing clubs in Bochum . Siegfried Jedanietz was the first leader in Wattenscheid after the war. During the same period, the married couple Fred and Edelgard Krüger received their fencing training at VfL Bochum in 1848 and in 1959 asked TV Kronenburg for admission. The fencing department of TV Kronenburg was a member of the Westphalian Fencing Association (WFB) until 1969.

In the fencing circular of the WFB of March 3, 1969, the following message was published: “The fencing department TV Kronenburg and the sports community Weitmar have merged to form an independent association. The new club is called 'Fecht- und Sportgemeinschaft Ruhr'. " Later," Wattenscheid "was added to the club name.

The club is known nationally and internationally as the host of important tournaments. From 1984 to 2009 the association held an annual FIE junior world cup tournament (Stadtwerke-Pokal) in Bochum. The list of winners includes later top athletes such as 1985 and 1987 Anja Fichtel , 1989 Nicola Hein , 1990 Simone Bauer , 2005 Roxanna Merkl , Anastassija Iwanowa , or in 1986 the later three-time Olympic participant ( 1988 ), ( 1992 ), ( 1996 ) and two-time Gold medalist Francesca Bortolozzi , Olympic bronze medalist London 2012 and most successful female fencer of all time Valentina Vezzali . In 2009, the 1st chairman Heinz Fischer was awarded the Medal of Honor of the Fédération Internationale d'Escrime (FIE) on the occasion of the 25th tournament . The sword tournament in Bochum for the Martin Zimmermann Cup, which is considered to be the oldest women's epee tournament in Germany, has an almost as long tradition.

Club successes

World and European championships up to and including the 1985/1986 season were only held in the age groups "Junior" (17-19 years) and "Senior" (20-39 years). From the 1986/1987 season competitions in the age group "Cadets" (15-16 years) take place, the recently introduced age groups "Vétéran I-III" (40-60 +) completed the annual tournament schedule to the current level.

Friesenkampf department

Friesenkampf has a long tradition in the FSG / RW and goes back to the commitment of the club's founding member and long-time chairman Fred Krüger. Krüger was not only a fencing master but also an avid sports shooter. In the 1970s and 1980s, the club presented large and successful teams at numerous all-around tournaments. In the mid-1990s, the department's activities almost came to a standstill. She has been active again since 2009 and successfully takes part in competitions at regional, state and federal level. The department has a mutual training cooperation with the FKFC Friesenkampf fencing club D'Artagnan, Bochum.
