Federico de Castro y Bravo

Federico de Castro y Bravo (born  October 21, 1903 in Seville , †  April 19, 1983 in Madrid ) was a Spanish lawyer . As a professor, he taught civil law and international private law at various universities in his home country and was the only lawyer from Spain to date as a judge at the International Court of Justice from 1970 to 1979 .

Life

Federico de Castro completed his academic training at the University of Madrid and received a doctorate in history in 1926 and in law a year later . From 1929 he initially worked as a substitute professor at the University of Seville , then from 1930 he was a full professor of civil law at the University of La Laguna , from 1931 at the University of Salamanca and from 1933 again at the University of Seville. In 1934 he moved to the University of Madrid, where he taught civil law as well as international private law . In 1961 he also taught as a lecturer at the Hague Academy of International Law .

In addition, he was legal advisor to the Spanish Foreign Ministry on questions of international law and a member of the delegation from his home country to the seventh session of the Hague Conference on Private International Law and, in 1968/1969, head of the Spanish delegation to the negotiations on the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties . From 1970 to 1979 he was a judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague , where he had previously served as an ad hoc judge in one case.

Federico de Castro, who was a member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation ( Real Academia de Jurisprudencia y Legislación ), founded one of the most prestigious legal journals in Spain in 1948 under the title Anuario de Derecho Civil and wrote the first in two and later in three Volumes published work Derecho civil de España an important textbook on Spanish civil law. In addition, he was co-editor of the Revista española de Derecho internacional .
