Felice Filippini

Felice Filippini (born June 20, 1917 in Arbedo , † September 9, 1988 in Muzzano ) was a Swiss writer and painter.

Life

Felice Filippini was the son of the mechanic Agostino Filippi and his wife Rosa (nee Menghetti).

In 1933 he studied for a short time at the Technikum in Freiburg and from 1934 to 1937 he attended the teachers' seminar in Locarno ; then he worked as a writer and painter.

In 1938 he started working as an archivist at Radio Monteceneri for the public service broadcaster and from 1945 to 1969 was director of the word department of Radio della Svizzera italiana.

Felice Filippini was married to the pianist Dafne (née Salati) (1916–2012) since 1940 . Together they had two children who both became musicians:

  • Rocco Filippini (* 1943), cellist;
  • Saskia Filippini (* 1946), violinist.

Writing

His most important work, the novel Signore dei poveri morti (in the German translation of 1991 Lord God of Poor Souls ), triggered a broad discussion and polemics because of its unfamiliar views and language. In his novel Ragno di sera he was more epic in his traditional sacredness and with his moral painting, later he distanced himself from his earlier anti-literary position.

Felice Filippini also worked as a translator from French and German into Italian.

Artistic work

In 1934 he began painting in Ugo Zaccheo's (1882–1972) studio in Lugano and later continued his training with Carlo Cotti (1903–1980). After initial efforts with woodcuts and painting, he soon became interested in wall painting and took part in the most important competitions for the decoration of public buildings, for example in 1940 he illustrated the stories of Niklaus von Flüe in the chisetta del soldati ("Soldier's Church ") chapel on Monte Ceneri, in 1949 he decorated the chapel on the square in front of the teachers' seminar in Locarno and in 1957 he painted the scene of a wedding celebration in Ticino on the wall of the top floor of the main staircase of the new town hall in Bellinzona .

He created numerous book illustrations , including 100 linocuts that he made for Guglielmo Canevascini's Ein Dorf Erwacht (translated by Jakob Bührer ).

From the 1950s onwards he worked almost exclusively as a painter and tried to incorporate foreign elements with his archaic style, using a palette rich in contrasts and colors. With his interest in European currents and his rejection of the solemn style widespread in the 20th century, he came close to the Milanese Correnti movement. The influence of Alberto Giacometti , whom he met in 1965 and to whom he dedicated some of his works, is clear in his late work .

Some of his works are located in the Lugano Arte e Cultura in Lugano.
