Felipe Ramírez Ramírez (born May 26, 1935 in Santiago de Querétaro , † May 14, 2015 in Mexico City ) was a Mexican organist , composer and researcher at the Mexican School of Church Music .

Life and professional activity

At the age of six, Felipe Ramírez Ramírez joined the Benemérita Escueala Diocesana de Música Sacra in Querétaro, where his musical training began under the direction of Julián Zúñíga and Arnulfo Miramontes. At the age of 17 he received the title of Organista y Cantor de Primer Grado and was appointed titular organist of the Cathedral of Santiago de Querétaro.

In 1959 he received a scholarship from the diocese of Querétaro to continue his studies at the church music school (today the University of Catholic Church Music and Music Education in Regensburg ) with Ferdinand Haberl , Karl Norbert Schmid , Theobald Schrems and Oskar Sigmund . In 1964 he completed his studies in musicology and Gregorian chant and his training as an organist and composer . During his time in Regensburg, Felipe Ramírez Ramírez was also active in the Church of St. Georg Schwabelweis as a representative of the choir direction.

After his return to Querétaro in 1964, he taught at the University of Querétaro ( Universidad Autónoma de Querétaro ) and at the Escuela Música Sacra . For more than 40 years, in addition to his teaching and research activities, he devoted himself to promoting the restoration of baroque organs in Querétaro, Oaxaca, Puebla, Tlaxcala and México City.

In 1967 he went to México City to conduct research at the Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (CENIDIM) and to teach improvisation, music theory, choir, composition, piano, organ and organ building at the National Music Conservatory ( Conservatorio Nacional de Música ). At the same time he organized an organ week with Alfonso Vega Nuñez in Querétaro ( La Semana Nacional de Órgano ), which he later brought to the cathedral of México city.

In 1978 Archbishop Ernesto Corripio y Ahumada appointed him titular organist of the Cathedral of México City. The focus of his research and reconstructions of old sheet music, which he continued until shortly before his death in May 2015, were works by the Spanish composer Joseph de Torres, especially his organ music , in the context of the Música del Virreinato . In 1985 the work Joseph de Torres Musica para Organo was released as a first recording.
