Felix Auer (politician)

Felix Mathias Auer (born September 16, 1925 in Basel ; † July 31, 2016 ) was a Swiss economist , journalist and politician ( FDP ).

Life

After high school in Basel and Schiers , he studied civil engineering at the ETH Zurich (up to an intermediate diploma) and economics at the University of Basel . He received his doctorate as Dr. rer. pole. From 1947 to 1959 Auer worked as a freelance journalist , until 1969 as secretary of the Evangelical Reformed Church in the canton of Basel-Landschaft , then until 1991 at Ciba and Ciba-Geigy , most recently as deputy director in the economics department.

politics

From 1971 to 1975 Auer was in the district administrator of the canton of Basel-Landschaft. From 1976 to 1980 he chaired the FDP Baselland. From 1971 to 1991 he was a member of the National Council and took a. a. Seated on the Audit, Finance and Petitions Commissions. Auer is considered to be the mastermind behind Otto Stich's election to the Federal Council in 1983; reminds that the night before the Federal Council elections has since been referred to as the “ night of long knives ”.

From 1986 to 1989 he chaired the Swiss parliamentary delegation at the European Free Trade Association (EFTA). From 1993 to 1995 he was President of the Independent Complaints Authority for Radio and Television (UBI).

He died in late July 2016 at the age of 90.
