Ferdinand Grautoff

Ferdinand Heinrich Grautoff (born August 10, 1871 in Lübeck , † May 15, 1935 in Leipzig ) was a German journalist and author . He published several books under the pseudonyms Seestern and Parabellum .

Life

The bookseller's son passed his Abitur at the Katharineum in Lübeck . From 1891 he studied history and philosophy in Berlin, Tübingen and Marburg. In 1899 he received his doctorate in Marburg. After a brief interlude as editor-in-chief of the Lübeckische Werbung , he switched to the Leipziger Neusten Nachrichten as a political editor . Between 1900 and 1922 he was the chief editor of this newspaper. He then worked as editor-in-chief of various technical papers.

In addition to his journalistic activities, Grautoff wrote several non-fiction books and novels. His greatest success was the politico-military science fiction 1906 published in 1905. The Collapse of the Old World , which was one of the best-selling titles of its time. Grautoff describes a war in 1906, as a result of which the German Empire, Great Britain and some other European states lose their status as world powers. The book was later published in English, French, Dutch and Russian.

Grautoff and his brother, the art historian Otto Grautoff , were grandsons of the Lübeck teacher and librarian Ferdinand Heinrich Grautoff . The two went to school together with Heinrich Mann and Thomas Mann .
