Live and act

Ferdinand Jergitsch was born in Klagenfurt as the son of a sieve maker and lattice knitter . He also practiced this profession himself.

Impressed by the fire brigade demonstration exercises that he had seen as a participant in Leipzig at the German Gymnastics Festival in 1863, the 25-year-old wire mesh knitter immediately set up a similarly powerful fire brigade in his hometown after returning home and founded the first with like-minded people as early as 1864 Volunteer fire brigade in Klagenfurt, at that time the first fire brigade in Carinthia, whose captain Jergitsch was elected by his comrades. The volunteer fire brigade of Klagenfurt with its modern, powerful sprayer, which Jergitsch ordered from Carl Metz in Heidelberg, quickly aroused widespread interest, and his private initiative soon found enthusiastic imitation, so that as a result not only in Carinthia, but also in numerous other cities of the Monarchy also volunteer fire brigades were established.

The energy of the wire fence manufacturer was greatly appreciated in 1869 when the Austro-Hungarian Fire Brigade Day was held in Klagenfurt, which was attended by 800 firefighters.

In the same year 1869, on the initiative of Jergitsch, eleven Carinthian fire brigades established an association of voluntary fire brigades in Carinthia, at that time the first regional fire brigade association in Austria. Jergitsch was appointed chairman and in 1870 elected chairman of the Carinthian fire brigade association. He held this office until his death in 1900. He was also a member of the Austro-Hungarian Reich Fire Brigade Association.

Ferdinand Jergitsch, who was also a councilor of the Liberal Party from 1882, sat down u. a. for the standardization of the fire-fighting system in terms of training and equipment. In addition, he initiated and achieved laws to promote the fire service as well as measures for the care of accident victims and fire prevention. The social component was of particular concern to him. When the state fire brigade association was founded in 1869, he urged the establishment of a support fund for firefighters who had died while on duty and their surviving dependents, and obtained a contribution from the communities.

Jergitsch was buried in the family grave in the St. Ruprecht cemetery in Klagenfurt and was later given an honorary grave in the Klagenfurt- Annabichl central cemetery .
