Professional fire brigade

The location of the Klagenfurt professional fire brigade is at Hans-Sachs-Straße 2. The main station of the volunteer fire brigade and the district fire brigade command of Klagenfurt / City are also located on this site. Fire director Gottfried Strieder has been the commander of the professional fire brigade since 2011 .

history

After the Second World War , Klagenfurt was occupied by the British. The British military government ordered that in addition to the volunteer fire brigade, a professional fire brigade had to be set up in Klagenfurt and so the city senate decided on August 11, 1945 to set up a professional fire brigade with two officers and 30 men. Men who worked in the fire protection service and the volunteer fire brigade looked for work after the war, reported to the city and were immediately employed because of the low strength of the fire brigade. Further reports were made on newspaper and radio calls. All applicants were former soldiers , including British prisoners of war. These did not have to wait for their release in a prison camp , but were assigned to the fire department beforehand. The professional fire brigade was under the protection of the British until 1951 as the "Fire Brigade". Regular shift work was introduced as early as November 1945. Until then, there was hardly any time off. The service at the beginning consisted of 48 hours of service followed by 24 hours of free time. Within the 48 hours of duty there were working hours, rest times and on-call times.
