Ferdinand Otto von Sperling

Ferdinand Otto von Sperling (born March 20, 1821 in Balgstädt (Querfurt district); † October 20, 1915 in Wiesbaden ) was a royal Prussian lieutenant general and most recently commander of the 27th Infantry Brigade.

His parents were Ernst Wilhelm von Sperling (1782-1848) and his wife Karoline Wilhelmine von Wurmb (* September 7, 1797, † January 21, 1822). His father was the master of Balgstädt and Ostramondra . His father married her sister after his wife's death. His brother Ernst Karl Oskar (born January 31, 1814 - May 1, 1872) was a Prussian major general.

Life

He received his education at the cathedral school and the grammar school in Nauenburg. After graduating, he joined the 31st Infantry Regiment on October 21, 1839 as a fusilier . There he was appointed portepeef ensign on June 1, 1840 and second lieutenant on September 15, 1842. From October 1, 1847 to December 15, 1847 he was posted to the Institute for gymnastic exercises in Berlin. During the first Schleswig War of 1848 he fought near Schleswig and Düppel, and was also present when Fridericia was taken. However, on October 10, 1848, he was assigned to the rifle factory in Sömmerda for a month . In 1849 he was fighting the Baden Revolution near Heidelberg, Federbach and Niederbühl in combat. He also took part in the siege of Rastatt.

After the campaign he was on September 3, 1850 with a patent for June 17, 1842 in the 19th Infantry Regiment. When there was a state crisis in Hesse in 1850 , his unit was sent there and took part in the battle near Bronnzell . From May 16 to July 1, 1853, he was posted to the 6th Engineer Department and was promoted to Premier-Lieutenant on June 14, 1853 during this time. From December 29, 1853 to March 31, 1854, he was transferred to Silberberg, where he was commanding the occupation command. He was then posted to the Infantry Training Battalion on April 15 to September 30, 1854. After his return to the 19th Infantry Regiment, he was employed as a company commander in the 1st Battalion from October 16, 1856 to September 20, 1859. During this time he was promoted to captain on January 9, 1858. He was then transferred to the 31st Infantry Regiment on July 1, 1860, as a company commander. He was then transferred from May 14 to June 7, 1866 as a commander in the 2nd Battalion of Landwehr Regiment No. 25. From June 14th to September 30th, 1866 he was leader of the 1st Battalion. During the German War of 1866 he fought with his unit in the Battle of Königgrätz . On September 17, 1866, he was assigned to the 50th Infantry Regiment, and on October 30, 1866, he was appointed commander of the 1st Battalion.

During the mobilization for the Franco-Prussian War he was transferred to the Fusilier Regiment as commander on March 6, 1870 and promoted to lieutenant colonel there on July 26, 1870. During the war he fought at Weißenburg , Wörth , Sedan , Mont Valerien and the siege of Paris . He also fought at Stonne, Bicentre and Malmaison. For Wörth he received the Iron Cross 2nd class . During this time he was on August 6 to September 27, 1870 first leader of the 50th Infantry Regiment and from September 28 to October 6, 1870 leader of the Grenadier Regiment No. 6. On January 18, 1871 he was Assigned to Versailles for the imperial proclamation . On February 16, 1871, he was awarded the Iron Cross 1st Class for Mont Valerien .

On November 4, 1871, he was transferred to the 51st Infantry Regiment as commander, and on January 18, 1872 he was promoted to colonel. From January 25, 1877 to March 13, 1877, he was in command of a border detachment in Upper Silesia . Subsequently, on March 13, 1877, he was transferred to the 28th Infantry Brigade as a commander and was placed à la suite of the 51st Infantry Regiment. On March 22, 1877, he was promoted to major general and on September 8, 1877, he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle 2nd Class with Oak Leaves and Swords on the Ring . On April 13, 1878, he joined the 27th Infantry Brigade as commander. But already on June 23, 1879, he was put up for disposal with a pension . On the occasion of his 90th birthday, he was awarded the character of Lieutenant General on March 20, 1911 . He died unmarried on October 20, 1915 in Wiesbaden.
