Ferdinand Saffe

Ferdinand Saffe (born April 21, 1867 in Wolfenbüttel ; † January 12, 1951 in Wolfenbüttel) was a German composer of the late Romantic period , music researcher, teacher and organist .

Life

The son of a railway official attended the Wolfenbüttel teachers' college from 1881. He passed the final exam in 1886 and worked as an assistant teacher. From 1888 to 1889 he studied at the Royal Institute for Church and School Music in Berlin. After completing his studies, he went back to Wolfenbüttel, where he worked as a primary school teacher. In 1891 he became an auxiliary music teacher at the teachers' college and was permanently employed there in 1892. Saffe was appointed ducal music director in 1911 and a teacher in 1913. The teacher training college was closed in 1928, whereupon Saffe taught at the grammar school in the castle and at the large school in Wolfenbüttel until his retirement in 1933 .

Musical work

Saffe shaped the musical life of his hometown Wolfenbüttel for decades. From 1916 to 1928 he directed the oratorio association. In 1927 he founded the chamber music group Wolfenbütteler Hausmusik and was responsible for the chamber concerts in the Lessing Theater . In addition, he worked for 54 years as a virtuoso organist at the main church Beatae Mariae Virginis in Wolfenbüttel. He was a member of the Wolfenbüttel Freemason Lodge "Wilhelm zu den drei Säulen".

As a music researcher, he made a name for himself in rediscovering the Wolfenbüttel masters of the 17th century, including Johann Rosenmüller , Michael Praetorius , Johann Jakob Löwe von Eisenach and Julius Johann Weiland , whose works he edited and published since 1912. Saffe's musical estate is in the Herzog August Library .

Works (selection)

Saffe composed two church cantatas, choral music, numerous songs, chamber and orchestral works, an organ school and organ pieces. He was in the tradition of late Romanticism.
