The grammar school in the castle is one of three grammar schools in the Lower Saxony city of Wolfenbüttel . The name of the school refers to the location of the classrooms in Wolfenbüttel Castle .

For reasons of space, a new building was built on the site in 2012 and was completed at the end of 2013. There you will not only find classrooms, but also a cafeteria, chemistry, physics, biology and music rooms. The new building, also known as the mirror lock due to the reflective glass front , is equipped with the latest technology.

In 2008 the grammar school was recognized as an environmental school in Europe .

history

The beginnings of the high school in the castle go back to the "Schloßanstalten" founded in 1866 as an all girls' school. What started with a small kindergarten in the former ducal premises of the Residenzschloss developed in the following years into a girls 'school and even later into a teachers' seminar. Anna Vorwerk was able to use the rooms of Wolfenbüttel Castle with her newly founded educational institutions for girls and teachers because the entire court was moved to Braunschweig in 1753/54 . At the end of the 19th century, the castle institutions had a kindergarten, a school for senior daughters, a boarding school for foreign students, a teacher’s seminar and even a “after-work house” for retired teachers.

The students initially came from Wolfenbüttel and Braunschweig, and in the following years others came from Hanover and other Prussian provinces. The "Schloßanstalten" shone far beyond the provincial Wolfenbüttel. Therefore, even schoolgirls from all over Germany and other European countries registered later.

After the death of the founder and sponsor Anna Vorwerk on November 18, 1900, the institutions were converted into a foundation in 1902 . During the First World War , the male teachers were mostly recalled to the front. 1913 was in the castle next to the existing private secondary school set up a secondary school for girls. On the part of the Braunschweig state government there was no interest in continuing the lyceum and upper lyceum, so the city of Wolfenbüttel stepped in as the new school sponsor. From then on the castle institutions were called Anna-Vorwerk-Oberschule.

In 1969 co-education was introduced. Since 1970 the school has been called Gymnasium im Schloß or, today, Gymnasium im Schloss, because Anna Vorwerk, who is known for women's education, should not be the namesake of a coeducational school.

building

Wolfenbüttel Castle in Wolfenbüttel is the second largest preserved castle in Lower Saxony . The extensive four-wing complex of the original moated castle served the dukes of Braunschweig-Lüneburg as the Wolfenbüttel residence between 1283 and 1754. The castle was destroyed several times by attacks and sieges. The appearance of the castle changed several times due to numerous modifications and additions. The building was the setting in the 2011 film “ The Great Dream ”. In 2013 an annex was built, which is called the "mirror castle". This building is equipped with MimioBoards.

Foreign language teaching

The school offers English as the first foreign language from grade five and French or Latin as the second from grade six. In the 10th grade you can then choose a third foreign language.

Furnishing

In addition to the teachers' room and the classrooms, there are also biology halls, physics halls, chemistry halls, a multi-field gym, several art rooms, three music halls, a clay cellar, two computer rooms and a cafeteria.

IT equipment

Many computers in the school have Internet (DSL) and intranet access. There are also data projectors (Mimioboard in almost all rooms), mobile PC stations and printers.
