Life

Karl Schaper was best known for his imaginary correspondence with dead and living personalities from culture, politics or fairy tales on oversized, wood-carved letters. Schaper's art is socially critical, his artistic subjects are politically committed.

life and work

Karl Schaper studied after 1945 in Düsseldorf , Paris and at the art academy in Kassel . During the Second World War he had a traumatic war experience in Croatia , which he repeatedly processed as an experience, mythologically packaged, in his art.

He was married to the weaver and bookbinder Susanne Schaper. Both worked closely together artistically. The Schapers' artistic work received international recognition and attention when they exhibited at documenta 2 in Kassel in 1959 and at the Triennale in Milan in 1960 .

The extensive and varied work of Karl Schaper includes wooden objects, woodcuts , linocuts , paintings, watercolors , graphics , strange objects (for example wooden towels and underpants) and tapestries . Many of the carpets are joint works, as Susanne Schaper studied weaving in French factories .

In 1975 both Schapers were founding members of the Wolfenbüttel Art Association . In 1988 Karl Schaper was awarded the art prize of the SPD parliamentary group in the Lower Saxony state parliament. Karl and Susanne Schaper worked and lived together for many years in Apelnstedt (municipality of Sickte ) near Wolfenbüttel.
