Ferdinand Schmid (born February 25, 1925 in Berchtesgaden ; † November 19, 2013 in Munich ) was a German manager . He became known as the boss of the Munich Augustiner brewery , of which he was director until 1991. Until the end of his life he headed the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation , which is 51 percent owner of the Augustiner brewery.

Life

Schmid grew up in Berchtesgaden, studied law and from 1957 was managing director of the Association of Munich Breweries. From 1967 to 1970 he worked for the Munich Löwen Brewery . Finally, he switched to the management of the Augustin brewery, where he was a personally liable partner until 1991 . Since 1996 he has been chairman of the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation.

During his time as a partner in the Augustiner brewery, according to a statement by Munich Mayor Christian Ude, he ensured that “Augustiner slept through the spirit of the times”; Schmid deliberately refrained from advertising for Augustiner, thereby consolidating the image of Augustiner as a very successful traditional brewery. The establishment of the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation, the brewery's main shareholder, which at the same time makes it impossible for investors to take over the brewery, also went back to Schmid. For his services to the Augustiner-Bräu company and the associated restaurants, Schmid was dubbed a beer saint or patron saint in Munich .

Schmid was considered media shy.

Work of the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation

Among other things, the Edith Haberland Wagner Foundation has set up a beer and Oktoberfest museum in Munich , supported the painting (restoration) of the Alter Peter town church, supported the restoration of the orangery in Stams Abbey in Tyrol, the tavern at Bavariapark on Theresienwiese and the Stiftskeller in Innsbruck. The parish of the Church of St. Peter gave the appearance of Ferdinand Schmid in gratitude for the support of the restoration of a figure of the ceiling fresco Hermenegild Peiker . For the veterinary faculty of the LMU Munich, the foundation financed the purchase of a collection of historical veterinary instruments.
