Ferdinando Acton
Ferdinando Acton (born July 16, 1832 in Naples , † 1891 in Rome ) was an Italian admiral and Minister of the Navy .
Life
Acton came from an English noble family who first emigrated to Tuscany and then to Naples . His father Carlo was like his grandfather John Acton Admiral of the Navy of the Kingdom of Naples . Ferdinando attended the Naval Academy in Naples after school and became a lieutenant at sea in 1849 . From 1879 to 1883, as the Italian naval minister, he laid the foundations for the construction of the naval base in Taranto and the associated naval arsenal . This 90 hectare facility was commissioned on May 22, 1887.
His son Alfredo followed in his footsteps and also became an admiral. In 1917 he commanded the British-Italian naval units during the naval battle in the Strait of Otranto .
