Fernando Enrique Valero Delgado (born May 6, 1958 in Guayaquil , Ecuador ) is a German-Ecuadorian glaciologist and artist .

Life and Artistic Creation

Fernando Valero Delgado grew up in a poor district of Guayaquil. In 1988 he came to Germany. He has been working at the Alfred Wegener Institute (AWI) in Bremerhaven since 1992 and was involved in ten expeditions to the polar regions . During an expedition with the Swedish icebreaker "Oden" , he was the first Ecuadorian to reach the North Pole in 1996 . He presents the work of glaciology with simple means. So he published

  • the website "Glaciology for Beginners" (2004),
  • five short films on the subject of "ice cores and climate archive" at the event of the IWF Knowledge and Media "geOmovie - Images from the Earth System" (May 3-5, 2005) and
  • Online games on the subject of glaciology: "Playing and learning with the Superglazi" (2006),

which are united today under the website eiskern.de.

Paul and Napoleon - around the world in one night

This commitment was a contribution to the fact that Valero, as one of the members of the glaciology working group of the AWI under the direction of Heinrich Miller, was awarded the “ Communicator Prize - Science Prize of the Stifterverband” in 2007 . This award honored the outstanding communication of research work on climate development to the public.

Valero invented " Paul and Napoleon ". Together with Anna Wegner, he published the children's books Paul and Napoleon - A Penguin at the North Pole (2009), Paul and Napoleon - Around the World in One Night (2010) and Paul and Napoleon - A journey through time with the Klabautermann (2017). All the illustrations in the books came from his pen. Valero uses many avenues for communicating knowledge about climate change to the public, including children's universities and exhibitions.

In one of these exhibitions he presented his work of collages made of ice. When looking at the collages under polarized light , colored images emerge that are reminiscent of abstract paintings.
