The Oden is a Swedish research vessel and icebreaker . It entered service in 1989.
shipbuilding
The official laying of the keel of the sectional ship took place on October 19, 1987. On 25 August 1988, the ship was in the name Oden baptized and two days later lowered into the water . The Oden was the last ship from the Arendal shipyard ( Arendalsvarvet ) in Gothenburg before the production of new ships ceased.
construction
General
The main difference between the ship and other icebreakers is that it is slightly wider at the bow than at the stern. When breaking ice, 12 mouthpieces flush large amounts of water against the bow. This will lubricate the hull and wash away pieces of ice. This flushing system is operated by two centrifugal pumps , each of which has a capacity of 9000 m 3 / h. The Oden has no upstream propellers, but the water flushing system can also be used as a water jet propulsion .
In contrast to most state-owned Swedish icebreakers, the Oden has no diesel-electric drive , but four pure diesel engines . All four engines from the Polish manufacturer Zaklady Urzadzen Technicznych "ZGODA" SA are manufactured under license from Sulzer and have eight cylinders with an output of 4.5 MW each . There are also four auxiliary engines, each with six cylinders, from the same make. In addition, the Oden has two steam boilers for warming up.
equipment
The living area has a high level of equipment with toilets and showers in all cabins. The officers' cabins have separate bedrooms. Further fittings are a gym, sauna and medical department with pharmacy. A system of containers provides space for laboratories, offices and storage facilities.
Since the Oden was classified as a warship during construction , it received four cannon connections, which were intended for 40-mm Bofors guns . It was never equipped with these.
use
Initially, the Oden was to be used as an icebreaker in the Bottenwiek in winter and as a research ship in the Arctic in summer . Thanks to a contract between the Sjöfartsverket authority and the Swedish polar research secretariat, the Oden is now active as a research ship in summer and winter. In the northern winter, the Oden works at the American research station McMurdo in Antarctica . With the 2009/10 season she was used for four consecutive winters at this point. American ships with personnel and material could reach the station through the fairway kept open by the Oden . In the summer of 2007, the helipad was raised so that there was room for further research laboratories and cabins underneath. In 2012, she went on a research trip to the North Pole with a Danish research team from Spitzbergen.
In 1991 the Oden took part in an international Arctic expedition. Together with the German research vessel Polarstern , it was the first ship with conventional propulsion to reach the North Pole on September 6th . Before that, there were only visits by nuclear submarines and the Soviet nuclear icebreakers .
The home port of the Oden is Norrköping .
