The Zagreb TV tower is a 169-meter-high reinforced concrete TV tower on the 1035-meter-high Sljeme Mountain . It is operated by Odašiljači i veze doo, a subsidiary of the Croatian broadcaster Hrvatska radiotelevizija and the telecommunications company T-Hrvatski Telekom . The tower itself is 92 meters high, with the 77 meter high antenna on top, the total height is 169 meters.
history
The tower was built from 1973 to 1976 and was officially inaugurated on May 15, 1976. The tower is not accessible to the public, although there is space for a tower restaurant at a height of 75 meters. This platform was intended to replace an earlier wooden observation tower , which was built in 1870 on the highest peak of Zagreb's Bärenberg massif. On September 16, 1991, during the Croatian War , the Zagreb TV tower was damaged by a guided missile by the Yugoslav People's Army , which led to the failure of broadcasting operations. A few years later the transmitter was put back into operation.
Other transmission towers nearby
About 1 kilometer east of the Zagreb television tower there is a similar-looking, smaller transmission tower made of reinforced concrete, the purpose of which is unknown.
