The Wismar fire brigade consists of one professional and two volunteer fire brigades . Organizationally, it is part of the public order office of the city administration in Department II.

Professional fire brigade

The professional fire brigade provides a fire-fighting train 24 hours a day , which consists of an emergency fire-fighting group vehicle 10-A, a turntable ladder with cage 23-12 and a command vehicle, as well as a swap-loader vehicle, but this is usually only used in major incidents . The operations control service (ELD, corresponds to the B-Dienst) is performed by an officer from career group 2.1 (formerly senior service) and the remaining functions are performed by officers from career group 1.2 (formerly middle service). The shift thickness is 1/6 task forces per shift (1 civil servant LG 2.1 and 6 civil servants LG 1.2). A total of 39 officers work for the professional fire brigade.

Head of the fire department

The head of the fire department is Ronny Bieschke. Due to a missing course (higher technical fire service), he had to give up the position as head of the fire service in September 2019. Bieschke cannot catch up on this course either, as the MV Fire Brigade career regulation requires a bachelor's degree to be a prerequisite for advancement.

However, the Hanseatic city was subsequently able to obtain a special permit - and due to a lack of applicants - so that from April 1, 2020, Bieschke will be appointed as city fire chief and at the same time head of the Wismar fire department.

With this special permit, the position in the higher fire service is dissolved again.

The employees of the professional fire brigade work in the following areas:

In addition to averting danger, the officers are also responsible for training and further education and for managing the volunteer fire brigade.

The Wismar volunteer fire brigade was founded on April 23, 1859. It is the oldest fire brigade in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania . Until 1997 the city of Wismar only had one volunteer fire brigade in its area, with two fire engines . The old town fire brigade was housed in a fire station on Gerberstrasse and the Friedenshof fire brigade was in the fire station built in 1996 in the Friedenshof district.

Wismar old town volunteer fire brigade

The Wismar Old Town volunteer fire brigade emerged from the original volunteer fire brigade of the city of Wismar. It was housed in Gerberstrasse until 1997. However, this location had to be abandoned due to the risk of collapse. A new fire station was only handed over to the Wismar Altstadt volunteer fire department in April 2017. The new fire station is located on Kagenmarkt. From 1997 to April 2017, the vehicles of the volunteer fire brigade were also housed in the location of the professional fire brigade.

Wismar Friedenshof volunteer fire department

Due to changes in the fire service and the growth of the city of Wismar, it became necessary in 1996/1997 to reorganize the city's volunteer fire service. A new fire station was built at the Friedenshof, which was handed over to the Wismar volunteer fire brigade on May 19, 1996. A fire engine was set up there. This fire engine was separated from the Wismar volunteer fire brigade on February 22, 1997. The fire engine became an independent volunteer fire brigade in the urban area of Wismar.

The fire station was expanded in 2001 by a social wing and in 2004 another parking space for the turntable ladder was created.
