Fiano

Fiano is a very old autochthonous white wine variety from southern Italy . It is particularly common in the Italian region of Campania . Fiano was already cultivated by the Romans, who also called it Vitis apiana because of its great attraction to bees (Latin apis, Italian ape) . In the early 1990s, Fiano occupied 251 hectares of vineyards .

It produces aromatic, spicy white wines with a spicy honey and nut bouquet that can be stored for a long time. From the grape Fiano are DOC -wines Cilento and Sannio and the DOCG wine festivals Fiano di Avellino made.

The Mastroberardino winery in particular makes a great contribution to preserving this variety. In Sicily , the Planeta winery produces Cometa, a wine made from 100% Fiano.

Fiano Minutolo , Fiano Aromatico and Fianello , also known by the synonyms Minutola and Greco Aromatico , are not identical to Fiano. It is a strongly aromatic variety that is mainly grown in Puglia .

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

In ampelography , the habitus is described as follows:

  • The shoot tip is open. She is hairy white wool. The young leaves are slightly woolly hairy and pale green in color.
  • The medium-sized leaves are three to five-lobed and indented to a medium depth. The stem bay is lyren-shaped open. The blade is bluntly serrated. The teeth are deeply cut compared to other varieties. The leaf surface (also called the leaf blade) has a slightly blistered structure.
  • The pyramidal grape is small to medium-sized and has dense berries. The oval berries are small to medium in size and golden yellow in color.

The vigorous grape variety ripens about 30 days after the Gutedel and is therefore considered to ripen late. The yields are usually high, so that targeted vine training has to reduce the yield in order to achieve good wine quality. It is susceptible to the genuine and downy mildew , and against trickling .
