Fels ( Luxembourgish Fiels , French Larochette ) is a municipality in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg and belongs to the canton of Mersch . The name comes from the rock on which the Fels castle was built. With a proportion of foreigners of 63.7 percent in 2007, Fels is the municipality with the highest proportion of foreigners in Luxembourg.

The municipality belongs to the territory of Luxembourg Switzerland (also known as the Muller Valley ).

Of the 1979 inhabitants of the municipality, only 718 are Luxembourg citizens, which corresponds to a share of 36.3 percent. A total of 1261 citizens with a foreign passport live in the municipality. With 909 citizens alone, or a share of almost 46 percent, the proportion of Portuguese is even higher than that of Luxembourg.

history

Fels was probably settled as early as Celtic times. A refugee castle was built on the Elsbeth Plateau around the middle of the 11th century, which was converted into a residential castle from the middle of the 14th century. The castle complex was destroyed around 1565 and, despite attempts by some lords, was not rebuilt. A fortification wall secured the place to the west and east to the Ernz from the 14th century. At its lowest point, this wall was 15 meters high. The western wall began roughly in the extension of the northern fortification wall of the castle and ran from there into the valley. At the point where it met today's Merscher Strasse, a gate regulated access to the place. On the eastern side of the village, the wall began at the watchtower, today's Verlorenkost, and went down to the Ernz. Opposite today's bridge on Merscher Strasse was the lower gatehouse with two high, crenellated towers. Until 1810 the wall marked the borders of the town. In the middle of the 19th century the place developed its new center on the Place Bleech. After the steeple of the medieval Nikolaus Church had bent to the side after a storm in 1824, the new St. Donatus Church on Place Bleech was planned by Carl Arendt in 1858 and built between 1860 and 1863. On June 24th 1865 the remains of the old Nikolaus church and 70 houses burned down. Donations were raised across the country for the victims.

Personalities in rock

  • Victor Hugo visited the community on August 26, 1862, August 24, 1864 and July 16, 1871. He was friends with the then mayor Jean Knaff.
  • General Patton had his headquarters for a short time in the Grand Hotel de la Poste in town.
  • Jean-Baptist Zinnen was the director and co-founder of the Philharmonic Society in Fels.
  • Michel Rodange was a nationally known poet and lived in rock from 1869 to 1876. The Hintere Gasse was renamed Rue Michel Rodange.

Attractions

The rock castle

The community is known for its castle. The ruins of Homburger and Criechinger Haus can be visited. Exhibitions take place in the Criechinger Haus. A historic footpath leads from Rue de Mersch to the castle.
