Ortisei in Scheffau am Tennengebirge

The branch church Scheffau in Unterscheffau , municipality of Scheffau am Tennengebirge , is a Roman Catholic branch church of the parish Golling in the district of Hallein in the state of Salzburg . It is consecrated to St. Ulrich , the patronage festival is celebrated on July 4th . The building is under monument protection ( list entry ).

history

The wooded area around Scheffau came in 1130 through a donation by the Archbishop Konrad I of the Salzburg cathedral chapter .
There are no reliable sources about the foundation of the first church. Therefore, the patronage of St. Ulrich can serve as a reference point: The veneration of this holy bishop is documented here at the earliest for the 13th century. The second patron saint of the church was probably Blessed Rudolf, as the oldest bell, which probably came from the 14th century, was consecrated not only to Ulrich but also to Rudolf. Furthermore, in 1475 the Chapel s. Rudolphi was given an indulgence.

The existing late Gothic church building mainly dates from the late 15th century - the vault under the west gallery bears the date 1473. The choir was consecrated in 1500 by Salzburg's Archbishop Leonhard von Keutschach .

On July 11, 2010, a new church organ with 15 registers was installed on the gallery by the Archbishop of Salzburg, Alois Kothgasser , from the Kögler organ building workshop in St. Florian in Upper Austria.

Church building

Interior of the church

The Scheffauer Church is a late Gothic wall pillar church . The church is a massive building made of unplastered Nagelfluh ashlars with a steep pitched roof over the nave and choir, which are of the same height. The front west tower is not structured and has a Welsche dome from 1793 as the steeple of the church. Originally it had a pointed Gothic tower. The single-nave and three-bay nave has a ribbed vault in the form of a four-part diamond star on pillars with round services in front of which the vault ribs cut, which were mostly made of Adnet marble . The original southern choir and nave windows with depictions of saints date from 1499, but were combined during a renovation in 1886.

Furnishing

The church patron Ulrich, depicted on the high altar, comes from the late Gothic carver Lienhart Astl and originally stood in the Gothic altar from 1515, which was created for Scheffau by the Hallstadt master . In 1853 this altar was brought to the collegiate church Nonnberg and exchanged for the altar of the collegiate church Nonnberg. It comes from Hans Waldburger and was made for Nonnberg in 1628. Only the Ulrich statue remained in Scheffau after 1853 and was added to the Waldenburger altar. The wooden pietà on display dates from 1550 and has been on a modern wall bracket above the altar since 1963. The crucifix hanging above is a work from the late 14th century. A Gothic offering box and a stoup made of red marble by the west portal date from the 15th century. A 14th century tombstone is set in at the north exit. Most of the rest of the furnishings date from the Baroque period. The wooden pulpit with imitation pyrography is dated 1723. The 14 Stations of the Cross from the 18th century are on permanent loan from the Church of St. Margarethen in Lungau. A valuable collection of folk reverse glass paintings from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries is kept in the organ gallery.

The organ

The church also had organ instruments earlier, but unfortunately we do not have any details about these. On August 19, 1879, the purchase of a positive from the parish church in Hallein with 4 registers was approved, because "[...] the existing organ is quite damaged, almost unusable and in any case its renovation would be costly for the property of the poor church " . The new instrument from 2010 is at least the 3rd documented instrument in the Scheffau Church. It was created by Orgelbau Kögler , has 15 stops on two manuals and a pedal and is mechanically and consistently designed according to classic organ building principles so that a long service life can be achieved.
