Filipe La Féria

Luís Filipe de La Féria Valente e Orta (born May 17, 1945 in Aldeia Nova de São Bento ) is a Portuguese theater director and screenwriter.

Life

La Féria comes from a wealthy, traditional large landowning family in the Alentejo . After his first extra roles from 1961, he became an actor in the ensemble of Amélia Rey Colaço at the Lisbon Teatro Nacional D. Maria II from 1963 . He then belonged to the ensembles a. a. of the Teatro Experimental de Cascais and the Teatro Cornucópia . As a scholarship holder of the Gulbenkian Foundation , he studied staging in London. He then became director of the Casa da Comédia in Lisbon for 16 years , and from 1990 onwards he devoted himself to staging musicals . His first productions were What happened to Madalena Iglésias and Passa por Mim no Rossio (dt: visit me at the Rossio), at the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II. The latter production in particular was a great success with the public and increased its popularity. Following on from this, he also increasingly wrote plays and series scripts for television.

In 1991 he rebuilt the Teatro Politeama and has staged a large number of productions there since it reopened in 1992. His musical Amália , which he produced there in 2000 and which is dedicated to the life of the iconic singer Amália Rodrigues , who died in 1999 , ran for six years. His production of My Fair Lady (2002) was also a great success, and pieces such as A Casa do Lago (Eng: Das Haus am See) with Eunice Muñoz and Ruy de Carvalho further established the house in the cultural landscape of the capital.

In 2007 he also became director of the Teatro Rivoli in Porto , where he a. a. Jesus Christ Superstar successfully brought on stage. He continued his work as a screenwriter for television series and films, which he often produced himself.

Filipe La Féria is considered to be a renewer of the widespread stage productions in Portugal, and also as an innovator who ties in with the previously popular revue theaters in Lisbon. He was named Theater Personality of the Year at the 2001 Globos de Ouro .

In 1992 President Mário Soares awarded him the Order of Infante Dom Henrique in the rank of Commander (Portuguese: Comendador ). In 2006 he received the Portuguese Order of Merit in the rank of Grand Commander ( Portuguese : Grande-Oficial ) from President Jorge Sampaio .

In 2010 the Portuguese section of the international gay and lesbian association ILGA awarded La Féria for its high-profile production of Poiret's A Cage Full of Fools ( Portuguese : A Gaiola dos Loucos ).
