The Suomen Rautatiemuseo ( German Finnish Railway Museum ) is a railway museum in the town of Hyvinkää in southern Finland . The Railway Museum is located near Hyvinkää station in the former station and depot area of the Hanko Hyvinkää railway company. The area is listed and dates from the 1870s. There are locomotive sheds and residential buildings next to the station building.
history
The Finnish Railway Union founded the Finnish Railway Museum in Helsinki at a meeting on March 16, 1898 . The museum was established in Helsinki and moved to Hyvinkää in 1974.
In 1898 it was decided to bring together the railway objects that had already been collected and to set up a museum. In 1900 Uno Öller was appointed head of the museum collections and at the same time the first permanent employee. At the same time, the museum received a large collection of commemorative medals from Knut Stjernvall, Finland's first train driver. The museum's first exhibition space was opened in 1905 in the basement of a building next to Helsinki Railway Station, where miniature models, photographs and other small objects were displayed.
The situation improved when the museum received the third floor of the west wing of the newly built station in 1922 with a total area of 535 m². The premises were inaugurated on March 17, 1922 in the presence of the President of the Republic Juho Vennola . Öller became the museum's first curator and the museum was taken over by the Finnish rail company VR-Yhtymä . During the Second World War , the museum was bombed and parts of the valuable photo collections were almost completely destroyed.
The museum was reopened at the end of 1948, the focus was now mainly on the systematic collection of objects. More and more office space was needed in the Helsinki station building. In 1959, the museum was moved to the east wing, where the museum was more accessible to the public.
When VR-Yhtymä celebrated its 100th anniversary in 1962, the museum's facilities were renovated. The idea of a museum with an open-air area was revived. The museum's collections already included a number of locomotives and wagons that could not be shown and had to be stored in the depot. VR-Yhtymä finally decided to move the museum to Hyvinkää in 1971.
The decision was influenced by the fact that the new location of the museum, the former station and depot area of the Hanko – Hyvinkää railway line , was almost in its original form suitable for this. The museum opened in Hyvinkää in 1974 and the Railway Museum Foundation was established to run the museum. The founders and those responsible were the management of the railway company and the city of Hyvinkää.
In the early 1990s, the Ministry of Transport started renovating the museum. With the help of the Ministry of Transport and VR, the museum buildings were renovated. The station building was restored and the locomotive shed expanded. The name of the Railway Museum was changed to Suomen Rautatiemuseo in 1994 . Office and archive rooms as well as a new entrance area were built. In early 1997, on the eve of its 100th anniversary, the Ministry of Education classified the museum as a national special museum.
In the 21st century the museum has expanded its collections with the oldest working steam locomotive in Finland, as well as the Dr13 and Dv16 series diesel locomotives, both of which are in good condition. The area was expanded to include the new exhibition hall.
exhibition
The museum has an exhibition area of around 5,000 square meters on three hectares. The permanent exhibition includes the historic Russian imperial carriages and the saloon car of the Finnish President. There are ten steam locomotives, including the oldest surviving locomotive in Finland from 1868 and several locomotives made in Finland.
Collection (selection)
The collection of the Railway Museum includes around 20,000 items about the railway and over 200,000 photographs. The museum also has a comprehensive archive of drawings with drawings and parking plans for train stations. The library contains over 16,000 volumes.
The museum staff consisted of ten permanent employees in 2014. The Railway Museum is run by a foundation and supported by the Friends of the Railway Museum ( Finnish: Rautatiemuseon Ystävät ry. ) Founded in 1960 .

Other exhibits
In addition to the locomotives, the museum has a number of cars, including three cars from the Imperial train of the Russian tsar, the president's saloon car, passenger cars of various classes, baggage cars, mail cars, prison cars and freight cars. The inventory also includes motorized trolleys, work vehicles and historic rail cars.
Worth seeing is the traditional Valtteri train, a train unit that was renovated in 2012 in the Pieksämäki workshop and in the Finnish Railway Museum in Hyvinkää on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Finnish Railways and shows the history of the vehicles' development over 100 years. The train, which is named after the former user of the saloon car, Walter Ahlström , has four restored wooden carriages. The oldest car, the saloon car, dates from the 1920s. The third class passenger car dates from the 1940s and the second class from the 1950s and 1970s. The interior of the saloon car is largely original. The class Dr13 diesel locomotive built in 1965 belongs to the train.
