tradition

Skiing

In 1888, the Munich- based bookseller and publisher August Finsterlin was the first to use the skis he had brought back from a trip to Finland in Fischhausen in the Bavarian Alps. Fischhausen thus became the cradle of alpine winter sports in Bavaria. After purchasing the Högerhof in 1891, Finsterlin settled in Fischhausen, published the first specialist magazine “Der Schneeschuh” and promoted skiing. In 1907 the Bavarian Ski Championships were held here for the first time.

Leonhardi trip

Although the chain as a saint attribute of St. Leonhard originally referred to the liberation of prisoners, it has been interpreted as a cattle chain in Bavaria since the Middle Ages and St. Leonhard is regarded as the patron saint of cattle and especially horses. This led to his memorial day on November 6th or the following weekend to Leonhardi pilgrimages as a ride or carriage ride followed by festivities.

The traditional Leonhardi ride has been taking place in Schliersee since the 17th century. It leads the riders and the festively decorated carriages from the center of Schliersee along the lake to St. Leonhard's Church in Fischhausen, where an outdoor service is held and horses and pilgrims are blessed.
