Fyodor Akimenko

Fyodor Stepanovich Akimenko ( Russian Фёдор Степанович Акименко , scientific. Transliteration Fedor Stepanovič Akimenko ; born February 8 . Jul / 20th February  1876 greg. In Kharkov , Russian Empire , † 8. January 1945 in Paris ) was a Russian-Ukrainian composer , Pianist and music teacher .

Akimenko was a student of Mili Balakirew in the St. Petersburg court chapel from 1886 to 1895 . From 1895 to 1900 he studied composition at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory with Nikolai Rimski-Korsakow , Anatoli Lyadow and Jāzeps Vītols .

For some time he worked as a teacher at the court choir and belonged to the Beljajew circle , a group of young composers. From 1901 to 1903 he was the director of the later Tbilisi Conservatory , from 1903 to 1906 Akimenko lived in France before he returned to Kharkiv in the Ukraine. From 1915 to 1923 he taught at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory. In 1929 he moved to Paris.

As a composer, he created the opera Feja snegow (The Snow Queen , 1914), a ballet, several orchestral works and chamber music, including a cello sonata, a string trio and two violin sonatas. In addition, he created piano works, songs and choirs.

Akimenko was Igor Stravinsky's first composition teacher .
