The Flachstal is a four kilometer long dry valley in the north of the Unstrut-Hainich district in Thuringia .

Location and course

The Flachstal begins not far north of Kaisershagen at around ( 355  m above sea level ), initially runs from north-west to south-east and after a kilometer and a half makes a bend to the south-south-west. It ends west of the railway underpass on the eastern flank of the Unstrut valley at the south-eastern exit of Reiser . In this area of the northwest Thuringian Muschelkalkplatten runs an episodic brook that has sunk about 50 m into the undulating Muschelkalk plateau.

description

The Steingraben in the Flachstal valley drains periodically after the snow has melted in spring and after periods of rain or heavy rain events. It flows into the Unstrut on the left . Most of the year it lies dry and has a stony, blocky stream bed made of rounded limestone rubble. Corresponding fossils are sometimes found . On the slopes of the valley, the rock layers of the Upper and Middle Muschelkalks are cut. The Flachstal is also an important cold air drainage path for the surrounding, intensely arable plateaus.

The steep valley flanks have been grazed with sheep for many years. Already the measuring table shows the typical wasteland signature for sheep drifts. The grazing with herds of sheep , to which goats were always mixed, also took place when the Flachstal was used by the National People's Army and later by the Bundeswehr as a military training area. At the time of the military training area, the Flachstal was traversed with several herds in order to keep the shooting lanes free from emerging woody growth. The areas were also burned down every year.

vegetation

Characteristic of the Flachstal are extensive gentian-schiller grass lawns on the valley slopes, which are strongly structured by privet-sloe bushes on the valley flanks and elderberry-sloe bushes on the valley floor. There occur along the stone trench small areas and riparian forest galleries and willows on. The steep eastern slopes were used at the time of the military training area. Sometimes planted with forest and black pine, which are atypical for the Flachstal. The rear Thalholz is a near-natural forest barley -beech forest with a species-rich herb layer and transitions to red beech dry forest in the steep slope areas.

Due to the occurrence of rare flora and fauna in need of protection, the Flachstal has been designated as a nature reserve since May 25, 1999 on an area of 187.6 hectares .

Since then it has also been one of the Thuringian FFH areas of the European Natura 2000 protected area system . The traditional grazing with sheep and goats is still carried out by local shepherds and serves to keep the area open.

The z. Sometimes rare occurrences of plant and animal species in dry, warm and structurally rich open landscapes of the hill country over limestone. A total of 220 vascular plant species as well as numerous breeding birds and butterfly species have been recorded for the area. The main protection goal is faunistic species protection . It is all the more important to maintain a structurally rich open landscape as a habitat for the rare animal species found there.
